Which opportunity is better?

Been a SWE for 12 years. I was at Wells Fargo for first 11 years and could never find the right opportunity to jump to tech manager. Finally left a year go for BofA working for an old manager who left Wells. Now I’m the product owner/tech lead for our project, basically managing 5 people. It’s a highly visible project and should open lots of doors for the next step in 2-3 years.

While I was at WF I built some really good relationships with the business partners I did work for. These folks have an opportunity they think I’m perfect for. It’s an analytics/reporting role for the same trading desk I used to support. The COO of that group always really liked me and really wants me in this role. He said he wants me to be “joined at the hip” to him so he can teach me every part of the business so I could be a business manager in 2-3 years.

It’s nice that both paths are good options. Staying where I am puts me on the tech manager path where I could rise in the ranks of the tech org at BofA while being mentored by someone I really respect. Going back to Wells gives me an opportunity to make a career shift over to the business side, in a business (capital markets) that’s super interesting to me. Compensation picture on the business side is also much better. I would get to start with a business and people I’m very familiar with.

Now that I write it out it seems like an obvious choice, but for some reason I’m fearful of leaving my current spot because I’m doing well there.

Go to the place where your manager will be a strong advocate and you have the opportunity to learn the most. Thank me later.

This is part of my confusion. Current manager is a strong advocate. Potential new manager seems like a great guy but I have no way of truly knowing until I get there.

Is the money ok for you? Do you need a career change title change to meet your goals? If the answer is no to each these questions stay. You need to spend some time examining your internal motivations.

If TC and benefits is significantly better at WF, jump ship. Otherwise, they had their bite at the apple.

What would qualify as “significant” to you?
