Currently interviewing for MS as a Sr SDE, when I was walking in the Redmond campus saw lots of Indian managers and my team is all indian. — will they hire me if I’m white? ..can’t believe I’m saying this in America but not confident about my race right now in tech. , I heard they are pretty racist against Chinese people.

Well, This is a sure shot recipe for disaster. Indians have their own way of speaking or writing English. And if you are in tech you better learn and respect it.. For instance even in the USA I use “revert back” “prepone” and color is colour. Suck it up Get used to it if you are in tech. There is no respite.

Chances are bleak. Indians prefer circle of Indians around them. They might hire you as a token white guy on the team. But you will face issues like language, culture etc.. Expect Indians to speak in their mother tongue in meetings which can be super annoying as you won’t understand a word. This is coming from an Indian. All the best!

Language is the main issue I've had... My mostly Indian team started speaking more and more Hindi in our open space office. It was incredibly unprofessional. I asked them kindly to stop, and they did.

Indian don’t speak in their “own language” in Bangalore or Delhi? Your cover is blown. By the way what is “Own language”? In India own language doesn’t exit for you kind information..

Indians are mean to Chinese, that’s not news at all. Indians only hire Indians, they throw hard questions to non-Indians but easy ones to Indians.

Yes. They're very welcoming. 100% of my coworkers are Indian and they've always made an effort to include me in stuff. I'm Korean-American (born here) and they're much nicer than Koreans IMO

I am an Indian manager and I do not have problem with any race or colour. 30% of my team is Asian , 50% white and rest Indians. There are always bad examples but that does not define everyone.

But Indians have always been classified as part of ethnic Asians. South Asia also has Bhutan and they consider themselves Asians. We consider you guys Asians.

      Aug 10, 2018

Race doesn’t play a huge role. In fact, most of the managers I know (including me) like to have a diverse team. It has more advantages than disadvantages.

Don’t think too much. If your fear is true and hypocritically they reject you based on your skin color, you don’t be around them anyways :)

      Have a great weekend.

The obvious answer is no. Satya is Indian, hence he doesn't hire anyone but Indian, and they in turn only hire Indian and so on. Consequently Microsoft is 100%, and I mean 100% Indian. Not a white soul to be seen in a ten mile radius. Or other races for that matter.

Also, just because white people did terrible things to Indians, why do you think they would do that in return?

I guess in a couple weeks you will find out. The question is will you be comfortable and productive in a majority Asian team. If your answer is yes, you have nothing to worry about.

What kind of a stupid question is that? Of course Indian managers would hire you, if you’ve got the smarts to get the job done. I have a team that’s 80% non Indian and I love it. Now at some level we’ve always got to keep in mind that “birds of the same feather flock together”, but this applies across all groups/races and it’s not necessarily due to the manager wanting specific ICs but because ICs generally prefer to report to a manager they can easily associate with. This results in a situation where a ton of ICs tend to apply to teams that have a manager that matches their background. This is especially true if the IC in question has soft skill issues and is unable to communicate well with a manager from a different cultural/linguistic background. You will see this with Indians and Chinese the most since their volume is much higher in the tech companies.
I would say this, if you think the manager can represent you well and you felt some sort of connection with them, join the team, else keep looking.

You will have better chances.. We need more white people in tech. But doesn’t seem like you are a smart guy otherwise you would not have asked this silly question. Indian or Chinese or White or Black manager he has to get his work done. Or his ass is on fire.

See now OP is going to blame Indians for not getting hired at Microsoft, even though he may not be good enough to clear interviews with white managers. As an Indian who grew up in South Georgia all I ever had were white people interviewing me. Did I ever wonder if I would get hired or not because of my interviewer's race? No. I knew I was good enough for the position I'm interviewing for.

If you're shit stay the fuck out. Indian managers or interviewers are not the problem, you are.

My least favorite manager was Indian... My most favorite was Indian too. I actually moved back onto her new team because I like working for her.

My current team is mostly Indian and Chinese with only two white people of the which I'm the only straight one. I really enjoy working with all of them. All of them are good people.

TLDR: Managers/Team can be good or bad for lots of reasons. I'd be more concerned with how functional the team is instead of what country they come from.

I am Indian Manager. I almost hired from every race and nationalities including White, Black, Jews, Spanish.

It hardly matters either candidate is Indian or other. I want to get work done and that’s what I am being paid off so do all my team mates.

Life is too short to waste in Biases. Any way Avg time we stay in one company is 2 to 3 years. Who cares
