Considering a C++ role @ Bloomberg. Currently @ MSFT. Is it overall a good place to work at ? What should I expect in terms of comp with 7 years experience ? (NYC location). Would joining Bloomberg be semi career suicide ? Would it be super difficult getting a job at top tier companies after ? (Google/FB/Apple...) Mostly interested in Bloomberg because of NYC location.
Around 220k. You can still move from Bloomberg, no problem.
LinkedIn is also in NYC.
I think it’s a great place. Google recruiters reach out every 3 months so definitely not career suicide. But what specifically are you looking for? If you DM me, I can give you an honest answer and tell you exactly what divisions to shoot for.
Can you tell us all what divisions we should shoot for? And yes, I can confirm that I get messages from amazon and Facebook recruiting.
It depends, what are you looking for? MARS has the best engineers though.
I have nothing against MARS but you are surely biased 😀 I'd say there are a lot of other cool groups with really good people.
I am a former MSFT moved to Bloomberg 5 years ago after 4 years. Great company, definitely not a dead career end. I receive several interview requests per week, and certainly NYC life is way more entertaining than Seattle.
Do teams that work on C++ use modern C++ or is it a one with homegrown libraries and such?
Several employees are part of the C++ standardization committee and the C++ skill level is certainly high. There are internal libraries built on top of standard C++ as well, overall strong C++ skills are expected at the senior dev level. There is a deep training for juniors in the first months of employment so you can learn it if you haven't yet.

How can my idiot brother who does real estate afford this
I would say it won't be a bad move. Definitely you can switch to FANG later, Bloomberg is well reputed.
