Amazon recruiter reached out with a questionnaire before the phone interview asking for expected salary. How to answer?
If this is the first interview, then that is odd, you usually get the comp form after the face2face interview. Tell the recruiter that you would like to wait with this information when and if you reach the face2face interview. Say that you don't want to cloud the HMs mind with the numbers, until it becomes necessary, would like to have a chance to avoid bias.
Blank, zero or $1
It's not a number field. You can put "TBD".
Amazon recruiters are no longer allowed to ask your current salary or expectations, so leave it blank. Let them tell you what the job is worth and go from there.
I was hired two months ago and the recruiter asked me.
Yeah that recruiter could get into serious trouble. They rolled it out to all HR and recruiting teams last year never to ask current salary as it has been challenged in court and amazon doesn’t want a lawsuit. Unfortunately most of the recruiters at Amazon are worthless and don’t do their job properly. There are only a handful that actually do it correctly. I was a recruiting coordinator and then a recruiter for 4 years. Amazon is horrible with their recruitment process.
"I left this blank, I'm happy to discuss compensation but let's make sure we have a mutual interest to take it further first." I.e. don't talk numbers before they know they want to hire you.
