with a background primarily in retail management, i was hopeful after making my first post a few days ago about breaking into tech and possibly becoming a project manager. after reading many job descriptions to look for soemthing to apply for they all ask for 3-5+ years experience in project management. anyone know of a company needing project managers that are willing to take a risk on my background? retail pay sucks, atmosphere sucks, and im just not over all happy. I’d love to get into the tech industry.
Is there a way you can position your retail management experience in terms of project management? When you break down your retail management job into micro-tasks, there has to be some tasks that aligns with project management. The process of buying-selling, inventory and order management is bounded by time and resources - think in these terms and tailor your resume. Tailoring the resume for the job that you are looking for is the most important aspect to get noticed. In fact, companies do like people from different backgrounds so that they can offer a different perspective to solving a problem.
This is actually a genius thing I should do. I have thought about how many different things I do daily/weekly that could be considered project management. Especially as I run my own store and have to make sure p&l look good and all. I’ll have to work on this ASAP
Get a certification. That will improve your chances.
This is definitely my next plan of action. Any suggestions on what carts are best? I was going to be looking in to scrum cert but then read a bunch of negative things about scrum masters.
