I use Equityzen. Some good companies have shares available periodically but you need to be an accredited investor

Noob here. Is there any benefit to investing in pre-ipo companies now vs when they actually are public?

A lot of the big valuation jumps happen when they are still private. Look at Uber and Lyft

To get accreditation you need net worth of over 1mil or income of >200k for two years I think

You need an accountant to certify you meet this bar I think

Do we still have the lock in periods after IPO with stock purchased with equity zen ?

Yes, all investors are locked out till the lockup expires, the IPO share that are issued are pretty much the only shares for the first 6 months
