i heard a coworker (from a different floor/team) loudly insinuating that conservatives, or those from the center of the country.... were automatically racists. i cant walk around saying that LGBT are sinners... or mexicans are all rapists.... why is this republican bashing ok? if youre a liberal in tech.... please remember. not all your coworkers agree with you. its so easy to assume in SF... but wake the f up.
What are your thoughts on Trump?
Slotting / labeling people into a couple of buckets - conservative, liberal, socialist is bullshit in my opinion. There are very few people if any who with agree with everything a label stands for. This is the stupidity of our politics these days
Not left, not right, forward!
Conservative != Republican or am I missing something?
No it doesn’t necessarily equal republican- all republican are definitionally conservatives, but the Democratic Party also has a significant conservative wing.
So when you said... "All conservatives are racist. Conservatism is partly about preserving a white supremacist hegemony." You were joking?
As someone who grew up in the middle of the country and moved to the west coast, I can assure you that racism is much more prominent on the west coast.
It is feel good, armchair liberalism. I love blacks but I'd never move into a low income black neighborhood. I want affordable housing but not next door or to affect my property values. I want people to have fair education opportunities bit not at my school. I want immigrants but not in my neighborhood. I am from the Midwest too and people are more honest about it there. Portland, Bay are all people who espouse deep liberal beliefs but would vote against it once it affects them in a heartbeat.
I’m from a country in the Middle East where people are also more honest about their regard for race and their regard for poverty. Bay Area virtue signaling liberals only care about talking about and tweeting about their superior morals, but deep inside, they are way worse racists than everywhere else.
It's not okay, and it is also definitely stupid. You're taking two labels (already a problem working with labels) and saying they are equivalent (in which case... why are their two labels?). It's also a classic bit of flawed propaganda logic. If be willing to bet on follow-up the idiot who said that falls back to the no true Scotsman fallacy. It's bullying masquerading as lazy logic. It's a way of excluding people that relies on the fact that most of the people in the room assume it's not them, so they dinner say anything, thereby making the people that who do assume it applies to them feel less than. Honestly, this is the kind of crap that liberals ought to be calling out.
Excellent point about the No True Scotsman fallacy
Just because he's right doesn't mean he should have said it
But it's social because he's both wrong and shouldn't have said it.
Nah unless he's not in America he's definitely right
What is "racist" anyway? The way the term is used these days, nobody bothers to define it, let alone prove it.
Look it's the mating call of someone who knows they are a racist but doesn't want people to call them one
Asserting without proof nor knowledge says more about the accuser than the accused. Since the term is still undefined, I don't know what you are accusing me of, so I don't really mind all that much.
I feel you OP.
Well of course they are racist. Plenty of well meaning people are. Tribalism is innate to human nature. Their hasn't been a single civil rights cause that conservatives faught for before liberals. Why do you resist the classification of conservatives as such?
All conservatives are racist. Conservatism is partly about preserving a white supremacist hegemony. Even if you don’t personally adhere to white supremacist ideology, you’re willing to ally with white supremacists to pursue your policy aims.
