Is Facebook a friendly place to work for foreigners/immigrants?

I have an offer from FB as a Product Marketing Manager. Have years of marketing and consulting experiences. However, as an immigrant who moved to US 5 years ago, I had unpleasant experiences working with an all American team before. Often time, the conversation was just not inclusive and sometimes I couldn't understand the cultural references or jokes people made. How's the environment like for foreigners/immigrants at FB? Any experiences, positive, negative ones in Product Marketing roles?

This is not a Facebook problem. If you're unaware of cultural/social backgrounds, so be it.

No, the world is bigger that your personal circle. And a company that has a global culture and includes people from everywhere has a lot of social and competitive advantages. OP, you are not the problem. Hope you find a company that you enjoy.

Unaware of culture backgrounds has nothing to do with my question. I am super aware of others and mine, hence I asked this question. Admit it or not, culture background has big impact in terms of relationship building with coworkers. Asking these kinds of questions before getting in is actually a smart thing to do.

In engineering most of us are first generation immigrants! But that is the norm in many big tech

Google momasearch Feb 13, 2018

Facebook is not a friendly place as such. So it doesnt matter if you are an immigrant or not. They wont be friendly either way.

I’ve been in 3 teams so far, all of them majority foreigners so I actually felt surrounded by people with same issues, concerns etc. Americans at Fb were always very aware and open to other’s culture in my experience.

Salesforce Negev54 Feb 14, 2018

Idk why would you even ask such a question? Why can’t you put in some effort to learn local culture, sports etc. so that you can participate in those conversations? Why is it so hard? Why people always want the world to change for them? Americans in the Bay Area are very open to learning other cultures, so why can’t you make effort? P.s I am an immigrant.

Riot Games FLOW965 OP Feb 14, 2018

Did I mention anything about not making effort? Not sure why you made that assumption. If you are truly an immigrant, then you know ur upbringing and culture is deeply rooted and hard to change. How can you make an effort when people were chatting about a childhood book they read that is only available in the America or how fun high school life is, which frat house they belong to when you were not born and raised here? Don't make assumption about people asking question as not making effort. The fact that I am here and speaking English, learning American business manner is a huge effort.

Thank you Salesforce. I 100% agree. Some people (not necessarily OP) want to work and live in the US and reap all the benefits and not make any kind of effort to learn or grow, except for with respect to the hand that feeds. Americans can't be expected to walk on eggshells and not discuss whatever they consider culture because someone new is offended.

Very friendly to immigrants , majority of company is non-US unlike the racists over at Google

Riot Games FLOW965 OP Feb 14, 2018

Haha. Is this true and what team are you referring to? Talking about FB not google of course. :)

Facebook Psyops Feb 14, 2018

It's probably close to the truth. My eng team is 95% non-US.

Amazon xEon51 Feb 14, 2018

Come at Amazon, most workplace conversations are in Hindi

Facebook sum41pwd Feb 14, 2018

Our PMM teams are quite diverse, maybe not as much as tech, but you’ll be working closely with the tech side too. It’s the most open and embracing culture I’ve seen. I’m wearing a traditional clothes today to work to celebrate/rep Wakanda ✊🏿.

I worked at FB eng. Vast majority of my extended team (15 out of 20) weren't US citizens. If anything, you should be careful not to end up in a team that's 100% Chinese immigrants (assuming you're not Chinese of course), there's a higher chance of that than a mostly American team, at least in eng
