ageism = complete disregard for experience. please vote.
Any where *
Ageism sexism exists worse in other business sectors in worse form.
My teenage daughter complains about ageism all the time. Wants a FANG internship but apparently they won't allow young women in SWE jobs.
Refer her to Google?
US Navy, I think Google was making a sarcastic remark lol
My companies multi-million dollar settlement from 2016 suggests yes.
Yup seen it first hand
At what age do you think it starts to get bad?
40+
30+
Used to experience this a lot when I was younger, now it's easier to be taken seriously and I don't have to prove myself constantly. Not looking forward to being too old and getting shit from younger people.
The shit from younger ppl starts during the interview processes nowadays where the entitled wannabe young punks want to outshine the older you by asking you how to balance a red-black tree.
I see my coworkers doing that sometimes. They like to disqualify people who don't get the trick question, and then we hire people who memorized the tricks but can't code. OTOH, I ask 100% non-tricky, everyday coding tasks that should take 5 minutes, and the last 4 older devs I interviewed failed hard (20 or 30 years exp in the language we use)
I would not apply to jobs where I compete with young kids. It’s dumb. Apply to jobs where experience matters
Easier said than done. Every tech company wants cheap code monkeys nowadays.
So don’t apply to code monkey jobs. They need 🦍 to manage 🐒
Just like some millenials are entitled, some "experienced" engineers are entitled too. It's not because you worked 15+ years in a given field that you are necessarily more skilled than a 5 YOE enginer *for a particular position*. Granted, experience is important and even necessary for some positions, but it's not an automatic ticket to skip the line when applying somewhere.
Dude people here are denying the fact that ageism even exists.
Do bears shit in the woods?
Not polar bears
Those shit on poles 😂
