Hi, I’m an EE working for HVAC manufactures looking to change professions. Current TC is 190-200k. I know some programming, but in the beginning level since I haven’t used it in over 3 years. Question is: how much programming do you have to know to land a sales job for let’s say, crypto, or sales Saas services or lead a sales team on it ? Do you need to have 5 year min to land this job? I’m trying to get the sense on how tech you have to be ? And what are the things I should know to considere the change. I’m on the fence between starting my own Saas service or going into the industry to learn how this works before I do it. Honest truth is well appreciated.
Thanks. What are the ranges of TC’s in Saas ?
I can’t say for sure. But if I were to guess it’s a lot lower than your current tc. I think the bigger sales tc’s are in b2b sales, or even government contractors / dod contract sales / analyst.
It’s unfortunate. You’re in real economy doing something tangible and useful. Now you want to switch to bs industry. I’m sad
You might be right, but looking to start my own solution in an area I don’t know much about.
Most saas sales people don't know shit about programming
OP - what is your current role and location? How are you making $200K TC at an HVAC Manufacturer? For reference, as an ME with a Masters in DC area, I was only making $120K TC and I’m currently in sales making $160K TC.
I was an ME with masters making 90k in LA. Fuck. Should I move to sales
If you can make the switch to sales, do it! I couldn’t until I had my green card, so switched only 2 years ago. You learn a lot about the business and the role will always be in demand even when automation takes over everything else. Also, worst case if it doesn’t work out, you can always come back to Engineering!
If you’re looking for a sales job you’ll need more marketing/sales experience than swe experience. Maybe 1 yoe might be enough on the tech side but you’ll want more of sales.
