Hi I have 2 offers pending not from FAANG. Company A at NYC for 142k with AWS and new technology. 12% bonus Company B at Seattle with 155k with old .NET only. No cloud or any such thing. 14.5% bonus Shall i sacrifice technolgy for more salary ? TOE : 15 TC 110K
Pick the better manager / team
This is not a meaningful difference in salary. Pick NYC. You'll be happier.
I Checked in smart sheet and salary post tax is coming to 30k more in Seattle due to NO tax state. But Iam not sure if I sacrifice technology
I will pick Seattle, old tech stack always is going to be in all companies, even new companies have legacy systems
True. The existence doesn't justify the motivation of working on it.
NYC sucks OP
Where would u like to live ? What kind of companies u wanna work at? NYC is gonna be mostly finance related companies. While Seattle has most top tech companies. Do u like concrete jungle (nyc) better or Seattle (more outdoorsy)? (I love nyc btw. Also like Seattle).
NYC is definitely not "mostly finance related" companies. All top tier sv companies have meaningful engineering presence in NYC. A lot of good adtech, retail and logistics startups started out of NYC.
I might be wrong. But if u r job hunting there. U r much more likely to end up in a finance firm than any other , no?
They are different cities. Maybe look past the salary a little bit and consider the cities themselves. Honestly the difference in pay here is small. If you only want to look at the positions themselves then I recommend the NYC position. Most companies pay more long term for knowing the new stuff.
The difference in pay is not that small given considerably higher COL, state income tax, and city income tax (if you live in NYC limits) in NYC....
Seattle. If it is old tech, it means there is scope for cloud push. New tech is around the corner. Possibly being a part of that process will help you grow more than going into an already established "new" tech company.
Not always true. If in health care or finance or any such field progress is slooooow. I have known healthcare company using pvcs. And finance having FORTRAN as core of their most popular money maker.
Cloud push is there but they have separate team exists who is doing that most of work. Team i have placed only work on maintaining exists though manger says some cloud work is coming up. Iam not sure on that
If only one is tech company and the other is not, go for tech company. You will find a hell of a difference in the work and culture.
