I have accepted an offer and they have now filed H1B transfer(today). When is the Ideal time to let the manager know about my exit plans, not sure if there are any implications on status-if I let him know upfront. Is it ok to let manager know before the approval or suggested to do it after approval? My manager has always been nice to me and a great person for sure - team has dependency on me and may need 3 weeks at least as notice period(one sprint). Please let me know if someone had any kind of issues on this aspect and ideal timeframe. #h1b #visa TC: 135
Only tell when ur h1b is approved, however nice your manager is to you.
Only after transfer is approved. You think your manager is nice until you give notice
This ☝️
After your H1B transfer is approved for sure.
Only if all below are true - 1. Background check is successfully completed 2. H1b is approved 3. Joining date is received from new employer 4. Original H1b approval notice will come before joining date
Wait for the approval
Where are you going to ?
Microsoft
I’m also in the same boat. Waiting for my h1 from new employer to get approved, so I can transfer from SAP. 2 weeks should be good enough, after your h1 transfer is approved . When I joined SAP, I remember HR from SAP was pushing me to join, right away on receipt. Now when it comes to them, they want at least 2 weeks notice. If you give notice longer than 2 weeks, your new employer would get a bad impression.
After you get approval
Thanks. Would it cause any issues if I let him know now? (Just so that he can plan)
Yes, it can cause problems, for YOU. God forbid, if H-1B runs into hiccups like RFE, you’ve now told your manager that you’re checking out and depending on circumstances can turn against you even though they mean well for you. It’s usually all probability and what if’s but weigh in options carefully. Immigration/visa > work has always worked for me. Ontopic story time: I left my first job same way as your post. Let my manager know at the time of filing and guess what? The manager suddenly turned hostile, and made my life miserable till I left. Thankfully, it worked out, but I still get shivers thinking if my H-1B ran into issues, what would’ve happened.
