Was laid off this year but just landed two offers and am not sure which to go with, what would you go with and why? Which would look better on resume? Both offers are nearly equal and are final. Both companies will require 3 days in office. Both companies seem to have good WLB. Nordstrom - Sr Engineer 2 (TC: 247K) Base: 190K Bonus: 57K Equity: 0 Pros: Chance to work with more cutting edge tech than Costco. Costco - Engineer 4 (TC: 245K) Base: 190K Bonus: 15K Equity: 40K Pros: Better benefits than Nordstrom. Also bigger brand name than Nordstrom? Current TC: 0
Costco has a higher ranked ceo
Costco is wayyyyyyy more stable than Nordstrom.
Nordstrom has a more affluent customer base making it resilient to economic turbulence. We did our big layoff in the spring. It would be hard to imagine we do more cuts given every team is short staffed. Nordstrom has a bold strategy for increasing sales at our full line store and attracting new customers at the rack. Personally, I’m bullish on Nordstrom. We’re the largest fashion e-commerce platform out there. Someone has to sell socks and I’m not buying Amazon basics.
Yoe?
Nordstrom bonuses are contingent on the company’s performance. We have effectively received 60% of our bonuses. I can’t speak for Costco however Nordstrom’s technology is innovative and relevant to the rest of the industry. This makes it a good stepping stone to a better tech company. WLB is great at Nordstrom. The only time things can be stressful is during the Holiday and Anniversary sale and there’s an incident with your services. We did a huge layoff in the spring. I don’t expect us to do any more so I feel stable in this market.
Erik Nordstrom is second to last in Blind’s CEO approval rating. Not sure how relevant it is but it’s a data point.
I would go for Costco as it's immune from layoffs. Covid, downturn,... whatever Costco is doing great, look at the stock and the people coming to Costco. For Nordstrom bonus, you're not always getting the bonus because of company performance. We got it this first half of the year. We didn't get it in the last second half and the year before. Also Amazon is opening their physical fashion store now. Who's known in the future? Technically, TC is better and the job is more stable with the Costco offer. I am a senior 2 and also looking to move out of Nordstrom as I prefer equity more than the target bonus.
I doubt old money will like shop at Amazon though, but agree I would 100% go for Costco if they use modern technology. The bonus needs to be discounted by 50% when compare TC, we only got it 1/3 cycles, although when there is payout, it’s usually bigger than 100%
Does Costco have employee discount? If so it’s a far better one that Nordstrom. I waste so much money on clothes and it brings tc down pretty significantly. Costco discount would be far more practical. Nordstrom is a nice place to work but new-ish C suite employees so the future is unpredictable. If I were you I’d pick Costco the ~200 billion dollar company in this environment considering possible layoffs.
No
Why there are no Costco folks replying here? They do not even need blind?
We are 3 days in office starting in January
What's the commute like for both companies for you? What's the vest schedule like costco? Why isn't there equity at Nordstrom, seems a lil odd there?
Nordstrom is in downtown Seattle, commute is easy because I live close by. Costco is in Issaquah so it'll be a bit of a drive. I think Nordstrom mentioned they don't offer equity until the principal level, but I'm not too concerned about that as the bonus makes up for it
Nordstrom equity is only offered to principal engineer and senior manager or up. We’ve also done a 3 day RTO. Only 38% of hybrid employees are complying. The office is not up to par with comparable companies.
