Algorithms, solving problems, math, logic, analytical skills. Everything sounds amazing and I used to think software engineers are the smartest people in the world. Last week I interviewed a boot camp grad who wrote first line of code 6 months ago and made it to Google. The amount of years SWEs learn all the tech skills in school, college, masters are being eclipsed by art students who did 6 months of boot camp.
This isn’t unpopular. unless you’re academic do people think we’re actually smarter then other engineering professions?
Comes from a history of traditional professions calling software engineering as "soft" engineering or not real engineering. But it's just a bunch of arrogant dweebs arguing with each other while the productive people between all professions collaborate to do stuff instead of wasting heart cycles on feeling superior to compensate for some irrelevant personal fears.
SWE aren’t that smart agree with that, but that’s a standalone fact doesn’t have any bearing on the arts guy doing boot camp
all it take is couple month bootcamp
Seems like it’s true
He didn’t even get into any art school so can’t really call him an “art student”
But he aspired to be artist, painted few times, yeah he couldnt get into art school, and look what happened. Determined artist can go very far, if Adolf could make some noise, then op’s artist SWE also can go very far
define smart
Eh. We don't use the skills we learn in college/masters.The things we learn are often not very relevant in the workplace.
You have to smart to do this job well. This is the dumbest post ever. 90% of people don’t even have the ability to even understand the basic concepts of software engineering let alone excel at it.
An art student w/ 6mo of bootcamp can certainly ramp up and churn out code but cannot immediately fill the shoes of an experienced SWE
They don't have the mental models to debug tricky issues that need deep CS knowledge. But, there aren't that many hard problems making CRUD apps
Idk, maybe Google has quotes for boot camp folks. I was interviewing for L4 and got ultra hard leetcode style problems.
Maybe Art students are very smart?
They are, maybe even smarter than us?
Maybe the ones switching to SWE are smart😏
