If the recruiting and hiring manager had $180k salary in mind and you said minimum is $145k, they'd just gladly offer you $145k? And one past experience I had was that once they matched my "minimum", I said, "can you go higher? Is that the best you can do?" They refused even to increase it a single dollar -- such as not even increasing it to $150k when originally they had $180k in mind. #salary #offer #negotiateoffer
Always give a range! For example: "my range is 130k to 165k depending on job requirements, which I will learn as the interviews progresses. " Now, that being said. Your lowest number should really be your highest or a number you will be comfortable earning as the company will naturally gravitate towards that. The range gives you more leverage to up the $$ as well. Good luck.
I stated that I have done some research on the bands of your company and the average salary for this position is a good starting place but it depends on what kind of offers I have by the end of the process. Recruiter was okay with this answer and stated that she they usually beat any competing offers so it’s not a problem. Amazon recruiter for context
Never give a range. Realistically find out the range of the targeted level, where you belong in that range based on your experience and interview performance and pad it by 20%. That should be the anchor that you begin your negotiation on. If you underestimated yourself the 20% padding will cover it, if you overestimated they will let you know.
Always leave room for negotiation, give range and mention it will depend on RSUs and other benefits .. etc.
I wonder if giving a range really works. Every time I gave a range, they offered the lowest point of the range. To them it is like buying a stock. You tell them they can buy Apple stock for $310 to $340. They are going to ask for $310.
If your number is too low, they will offer something higher. Otherwise, when you figure it out, you will leave.
somehow I found out it is like this, at least sometimes: they had $180k in mind, and they are like buying a stock. They ask, how much is stock ABC selling for? They are ready to pay $180. Now you tell them it is $145. They will fix on $145 and hesitate to raise even $1.
Never give ur cards first Always give a range If you get what you asked for, be happy and STOP being greedy
my range might be $145k to $180, and they might offer $145k in the next 10 seconds.
