I had my doubts when I joined that I'm qualified for my position. Same after a few months. Everyone reassured me it's just imposter syndrome and I'll get over it. Given enough time I'm sure I can eventually grow into the role, but I don't know how long, and in the mean time I feel bad for letting my team and manager down. I'm also worried about bad perf review. Should I ask for a downlevel? I will be less pressured and able to perform at my own pace. Possibly related - I'm interested in switching to product role. I was previously told I need to prove myself in my current eng role first, that never really made sense to me. What if I ask to switch to product role and use that as a reason for the downlevel request since I don't have real product experience? E5 360k 8yoe
I responded fake it till you make it. But you shouldn’t really do that. You should recognize that this is a challenge that will certainly force you to grow. Rise to the occasion and learn from your mistakes. See if you can find a mentor that can help you recognize certain errors that you’ve made and how to combat those behaviors/challenges in the future. Nobody became great by first admitting defeat.

Keep improving every day. Don’t dwell, but look back at the most recent events and find 1 or 2 concrete ways that you could improve. Seek out the opinion and help of others of how to make that improvement a reality.
Imagine you go one level down? Now you are on the radar. Then what? Also it would probably mean for then that you aren’t confident in yourself and they will be lowballing you from now on.
You are probably oblivious to ALL factors that make you your level. Its not just algorithms.
Better than being underleveled and waiting for someone to "notice".
Maybe you should consider changing careers.

Does faking it and struggling to justify the paycheck make you happy? If that's the case then just stay. Also, it may be the team or the manager or the product or event the tech stack that does not let you raise and shine.
People spend years bashing their head against the promo barrier to get to L5, just be glad you don’t have to go through this and have faith you’ll eventually feel comfortable in the role.

Better to have a higher level and fail to meet. Also if you haven’t been pipped, doesn’t that mean your manager thinks you are meeting expectations. You’re probably doing a lot better than you think.
