11 offers to laid off[UPDATE]: 5 offers

Hey all, Few months ago I made a post about being laid off from Block when only two years before that I had 11 offers. Finished my interviews and landed 5 offers! The things that changed from last time I interviewed: - Interviews are most definitely harder to pass. This isn’t because the interviews are harder. It’s mostly because doing well on on-site is no longer enough. The stars really have to align. For example I did amazing on two onsites (DoorDash and Affirm), but they found someone that’s better fit for the team. - There is a bit more of gatekeeping now. Interviewers behavior matters a lot, and if they come in with the mindset that they aren’t looking for you to pass, they will find a way for you not to pass. The nitpicking can also get on your nerves during the interview, which leads you to not be as focused. I had a dude pause me every second during system design interview to ask stupid questions. My guess is with layoffs and over hiring, interviewers feel responsible to gatekeeping and allow less people in. For me it indicates bad culture at the company, so I am glad it did not go well on those. - Speaking of gatekeeping. Less people are willing to give referral. Most definitely less on blind, but surprisingly also 1-2 connections ignored my message. Remember that the tech circle is small, and you may in the future need a referral as well. - landing interviews is hard as well. It’s not clear if those positions are even real, because some of them are newly open, they have 100% match with my background, and yet get rejected. Something is up. I wasn’t able to land an interview at high paying companies like Netflix, Airbnb, Pin, and really any of the hedge funds (despite having connection to many). - I failed two recruiter screens. Reddit and Ramp. I honestly don’t even know why and how lol. Ramp’s recruiter got a little annoyed that I told them I knew them as Brex competitor. (But really that’s how I learned about them). Recruiter pushed back that they have much more going for them than Brex. (Haha well alright then). Reddit I have no idea why. But I can tell I failed both after the call. because they basically tell you at the end (will get back to you). Both were a first in my 8 years career. Anyway despite the tough market, I can’t complain since I was able to land offers, with the highest being ~400k TC (still 100k less than my previous job). Phone screen rejections: 2 (MongoDb and Meta. The guy at MongoDb wasn’t prepared and told me the wrong output lol. Meta I have no idea why) Phone screen pass: 13 Onsites: 9 (canceled the rest) Offers: 5 Accepted: 1 Really excited about the new company. Going to keep it private so I am not doxed, but I am hoping to stay at this company for a while. Everyone I interviewed there was there for 5+ years, which speaks volume. Stay kind to each other, especially during this market. At the end of the day we are all in this together. YOE: 8 New TC: 400k Original Post: Check out this post! To be honest same prep from the time I received 11 offers. I have all that info on that post!

Congrats and thank you for the amazing experience write-up.

Meta Lavontay Apr 23

Great result and congrats. On the part with less referrals on blind it could also be due to the fact that there is less to refer too. Not everyone is hiring like In 2022 and many are hanging on to their job by dear life.

Block laidoffnow OP Apr 23

That’s fair. I am making assumptions about the gatekeeping that might not be true.

Broadcom ESsOGenAi Apr 23

Congrats. 5 offers, market seems to be getting better. Can you post tc details

You took the Minkgeek offer?

Amazon YiUE37 Apr 23

Could you tell me some tips to get your resume selected please? Also, did you tell the recruiter that you were laid off?

Block laidoffnow OP Apr 23

I told everyone that I was laid off yeah. People sympathized nothing bad came out of it tbh. (At least I think so) Resume wise. I chased high impact projects so those looked good on resume. If you have any, talk about them and their impact.

I've had recs pulled after on-sites. It's like thanks for wasting my time!

Block laidoffnow OP Apr 23

Yeah… just gotta go into the interview with the mindset that you might be disappointed, for reasons out of your control.
