Hi, today officially marks the 18th month of my job search. In all this time, I've had 4 interviews. Since it's so few, I can list them: 1) jr data scientist for a conversational AI startup at 125k-250k base 2) predictive data analyst for a government job at 88k 3) dialog engineer for another startup at 65k 4) computational linguist (Mexican Spanish) for Meta (contract) at 105k. I chatted with a former Google employee and they suggested I try some keyword stuffing. I know my greatest weakness is definitely my lack of real work experience though. I am primarily aiming for contract roles to build up experience. Several recent alums are working a cool-sounding generative AI analyst contract role at NVIDIA but it seems to be one of those secret roles where you need to know the right people. I asked one of the alums and she told me I'd never find the role online, so it does seem to be a well-kept secret. But anyway, yeah, I was wondering if there is anything else I can really do to alter my resume or if anybody might be able to suggest other roles I could try. I've applied for tech roles at so many non-tech companies like Home Depot to Nordstrom, so I'm really not all that picky (nor can I afford to be). TC: $50/hr at my freelance role at Remotasks (the work isn't exactly stable at times/no guarantee of tasks/work) #jobs #resume #resumereview #meta #nvidia #nlp
Problem number 1, you list a load of skills you apparently have yet your work experience seems completely unrelated. It looks like you are actually a desktop engineer who is applying for roles way outside of your skillset
And that's why you have a 0.33% application to interview rate and why you have not secured a job. Reduce your expectations and apply desktop engineer type roles and you might actually find a job
I tried for an IT role with a referral that paid about 40k. Rejected the next day 😅
Are these all academic projects you've listed?
Yeah 😕 Most during my graduate studies but one from an undergrad research symposium too.
You’re targeting analyst / data scientist roles (entry level), right? I agree with Cisco. Also, If possible, opt for brevity. Trim description in the bullet points that emphasize your action. For instance, the first bullet point in your current job can be shortened. Recruiters will look at your resume for a few seconds, so best to optimize for that. You can solicit industry expert help with your resume but I don’t know how helpful it’ll be in this market. New grad market is very difficult these days since resumes more or less looks the same.
Ideally some type of computational linguist/NLP role, but those seems pretty scarce these days so an entry-level data scientist also seems adjacent. With the recent Meta contract role interview, all of the applicants apparently sucked because the hiring manager cancelled the role 😅 It is quite tough, yeah. I've had professional resume writers offer their services for free since I've been on food stamps/CalFresh (though I imagine once I earn enough from Remotasks I will no longer qualify).
I don’t have much advice here; The only thing I would try is to see if you have friends in a similar position and get their perspective on their new grad job search experience. Looks like you’re doing everything right. Hang in there! You only need one 😃
Skills can be one section at the bottom. Companies care more about work experience than anything. Also masters took 4 years while bachelor’s took 2 years for you?
Yeah, I went to community college since I didn't finish high school (dropped out about a month into the 9th grade), so I was only at my undergrad school for about a year and a half as I had community college credits. I did my graduate program (2 year program) part-time since I've been serving as my mother's caretaker.
mention only your graduation date, year otherwise it needs a lot of explanation. Freelance would be better than self-employed Add some personal projects of the type of jobs you are looking for. Definitely combine skills in one section and put it at the bottom.
Work experience you be at the top. I’d flush that out a little more. Get rid of your projects section. Move your skills section to after your work experience. Education at the bottom. Good luck
How to get hired at Remotasks?
Apply for the subject matter expert role that best aligns with your field of expertise. For mine, there was no interview or anything. I just had to take two subject matter exams to demonstrate my mastery and determine my pay rate. Outlier is also Remotasks if you can't find any openings for Remotasks.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I dont see anything on here that would make you a good candidate for SWE role... especially in this market. Tons of resources exist to help with career path etc. keep up the projects and when the market improves you'll land something which will open more doors. Keep up the hard work and best wishes!
Oh yeah, I don't think I'd cut it as a proper SWE type either. When I took the weeder CS courses in undergrad, I got a C+ in two of them and a B+ for the final one. My grad program was purely Python, so I haven't touched C++ and Java in quite some time. I remember a lot of the syntax, but definitely am rusty by this point. Thank you, I would definitely prefer to be a computational linguist/what I studied, but the opportunities for such roles have been slim lately 😅
Computational linguistics got fucked as a discipline after Transformers and other advancement in NLP ML architecture. There is hardly any linguistic Stuff needed for these things to work. Have you tried academia in NLP dept?
I suggest applying to research engineer roles at universities (biology, neuroscience, etc). There's a lot of basic technical experience needed there for automation/analyses. Moreover academia is pretty terrible at talent acquisition and listing jobs through normal means (LinkedIn, Indeed). Resources are scarce so you can probably work on things you have no experience if you are willing to learn The pay won't be that great, but it's a fun job, relatively secure, and you can build experience/publications. Anyways this was my route as someone from a non traditional major who had trouble landing jobs
