19 yo Need Advice

Hello, I'm a 19 year old finishing my bachelor's (avg state school) in the spring. I have 9 months SWE intern experience. About to get a job offer for avg fortune 500 company 80k remote (Midwest) to start in the spring while I'm finishing school. Quick to the point, see poll. My aspiration is to work in big tech, I know cliche, but with layoffs and hiring freezes this might not be possible right now. I'm wondering if I should play it conservative and take the job or try for better. Please note 80k here is equivalent to ~120,000 Seattle according to nerdwallet. #engineering #software #swe

If its a stable company just take it. Prep till the market gets better and then switch to FAANG.

Work there for at least a year. Don’t be too arrogant, you need work experience especially in this economy. But after a year or two you need to move on if they don’t increase your salary

Take the job and relax a little. You’re 19, you don’t need to be on the grind like that. Get a hobby, make friends, have some fun.

This. It will be harder to make friends as an adult. Find a hobby and chillax

How are you about to finish a bachelors at only 19?

Google grizzlysap Nov 27, 2022

It’s possible with enough AP classes in high school. But it means OP has been on the grind pretty hard since they were a kid.

Are you a US citizen? How are you graduating so young

Thomson Reuters Jflyer45 OP Nov 27, 2022

Yes, my state of Minnesota allows highschool students to do 2 years of college at a university for free. It's called PSEO here but many other states have the equivalent.

Definitely take the offer in hand. If you have to renege, that F500 company will be just fine. Especially as you are so young and with the market being low, it’s a great time to start your investing and just max your 401k. You may not pay rent since you’re remote, 19… so even more of your income to take advantage of the current times. I graduated high school when I was 18 and didn’t start investing until 22-23. Having 3 or 4 more years of investing would make such a big difference and on top of that, the market is low now.

I would definitely take the offer, especially since the company seems alright and work experience is definitely more valuable. Congratulations on the offer and finishing your bachelor’s, OP. I was wasting away my life at 19; you’ve got a lot of time to keep improving and try for a better job later on. TC: 62K, early 20s

It has to be learned by the individual

Out of curiosity, why did you choose to attend an “avg state school”? I personally don’t see anything wrong with that, but most kids who take a ton of college courses in high school and aspire to get into big tech also want to attend a top-notch college

Thomson Reuters Jflyer45 OP Nov 27, 2022

For a few reasons, ultimately I'd like to retire early. My credits wouldn't transfer to ivy so I'd have to do 4 years total. My parents don't believe in helping for college, so I'm completely on my own. They are also upper middle class, thus I would have been pay near full price. I'll be graduating debt free at the state school.

I did the same thing, competitor, my parents were similar too (justifying that I will take school more serious if I have skin in the game, which was very true).
