Which group would you rather be? Do you want to be very productive but probably overworked and underpaid, or among those that take good comp but effectively do much less? It is the somewhat famous Price's square root law. The more familiar version of it is the 80-20 effect.
Younger people are the ones who think you do a job to make yourself proud. Older people know a job is nothing more than a paycheck.
I enjoy what I do and would not half ass it.

The problem is that you can be an awful manager in this market and make $500k or more. They will be retired before they run out of good job opportunities to coast at.

Sure, but the way this question was phrased I'd rather be the manager who has no idea what they're doing than e.g. some dev who's underpaid at Amazon.
