Dear fellows, Quick overview, I am based in Canada and have been unemployed for the past 10 months. I'm not getting any single call these days. I have updated a lot of feedback in my resume so far. I have been posting from time to time. This time I need a quick overview from you expert guys plus a few other points mentioned below: 1. Does it look good now concerning format? It's a plain Word file in which I adjusted my content. There is no table involved in it. Any recommendations if I should change it? 2. Most people say, it seems to them a just Ruby on Rails based resume. And I'm just an API sort of guy. How can I make it look like a generic expert SWE resume? Tech stacks preferences in order: Ruby on Rails, React JS, React Native, PHP, NodeJS, Python. 3. Bullet points content organization, does anything need to be improved or is it good? 4. Is each section good, or do I need to do any kind of up and down to make them 1st section Work Experience, 2nd section be Education etc. or current organization is way better? 5. Any other tips in general would be highly appreciated, please? #jobs #resume #resumereview
Work experience should be on top
Thanks, man I will do it. And where should I put the Skills? Before education? So, Word experience Professional projects Skills Education Right?
Yep
add a summary to pitch yourself
Thank you, mate. I will add it.
Apply everywhere. Startups, small companies, everywhere.
Thanks mate for the guidance. I am just going to this path and i am hoping i have more improved resume this time. Is there any way to get the list of all such companies? I mean what a person could usually do apart from linked, indeed, glassdoor or?
You’re applying for SWE, correct? I would quite literally search on that in your area and apply to as many jobs as possible.
It’s not your resume, it’s the job market overall, not sure what’s happening in Canada, but it’s very very slow even in US, keep trying.
Thanks for the motivation mate. It’s dead slow here too. But these days not even a single call….!
It’s basically dead in the Canada
Suggestions: 1. Work experience, project, skills , education 2. Add 2-3 lines of summary which tells your skills 3. Developed is being used multiple times you can try to reduce the use Good luck with your search!!
Thanks mate for the guidance….. I will work on it and try again…!!
Summary pitch Move skills bottom Use more impact in your experience
Thank you mate. I will do it accordingly.
Did you get down leveled from Senior to Mid SWE?
No I am not. It’s just a freelance work that I have done for a client based in Canada and i added it on top of resume so recruiters will think I have canadian experience on my resume. Do I need to rewrite title again?
Make margins wider. Lines that long are hard to read.
Thanks for the input, mate. I will make it wider from left and right.
Have you tried getting referred by an employee instead of spending hours tailoring your resume? Referrals almost always get interview calls. Also, reaching out to HM directly with extraordinary introduction works most times too.
I have tried twice so far but my guy told me HM said I l don’t have solid Canadian experience on resume. Apart from that I didn’t get any success in securing referrals.
Yeah that’s the problem very unique to Canada. It’s only here that they ask for Canadian experience and some prefer PR/citizens. I’d still suggest to keep going. Use LinkedIn to find HMs or relevant contacts at the company and then make an extraordinary introduction. Also, Canadian job market is much smaller compared to US. Don’t rely on just applying on company website. It’s rare to get interview call from there unless you applied within the first hour the job was posted. Companies usually get about 200 applications within 3-4 hours of job posting and they don’t read all of those that ATS recommends. That’s why my emphasis on direct contact with HM or recruiter.
These are production level professional projects that I have done in different companies. They are not personal ones. Should I keep/remove them completely?
Thanks, I will do it according to that. Makes sense. :) Except for the last role which was earned by working on a freelance project for a Canadian client, all were earned in Pakistan. The companies got names but not very professional really like we see in western side. So, it would not be recognized in Canada?
