30 too late to join tech?

Asking for a friend. Would you feel intimidated/unwelcome in tech as a junior programmers at the age of 30 as a minority female?

Yeah, I'd feel intimidated. Esp, w/ people younger as senior devs. It's possible though. They'd just have to own who they are and what they want out of life.

I’ve seen folks join after grad school and they’re pretty close to 30 and fairly junior. It’d be climb but doable I think

No. All you need is the analytical skills. Rest is easy to learn

No as long as she is open minded. I know someone who changed his career to tech in his late 30s. He's always been telling me that he's having a blast because there's always so much to learn.

Definitely doable. If you are analytical and hungry for learning new things, it's not too late. There are quite a few people who joined tech later in life. They tend to have a very good attitude and maturity, and tech is fresh for them. Finding the right team that will make you feel welcome matters a lot.

Its never too late. Just start out as an analyst and work up to manager then director. It’s a pretty fast transition if you know what you’re talking about.

I have two colleagues who are 30+ and have joined us as SDE1 from boot camp. It was initially difficult for them from what I heard as all our team are < 30 years and our manager is 27. But as time went be that never became a thing of concern as per them.

I started as a DS 1 at 33. Depending on dress and attitude, people might assume you’re younger since everyone else around is so young.
