I got an offer for a backend mid-level SDE role based on the number of years on my resume. In Accenture, I was a "backend dev" for 6 months where I wrote very vanilla java code that even a college freshman can write. The other project that I spent the majority of my time on (3.5 years) was a manual QA role. I feel like by accepting this offer I'll set myself up for failure because I can't even create a RESTful service. All I can do is hit an API endpoint and do something with the data 💀. What should I do? Should I just create a project and work on things that I don't have knowledge of? Btw the new role will also be Java backend development Edit: Thanks for your feedback everyone. Looks like I’ll have to buckle up and live and breathe Google + Stack overflow Curr TC: 94k New TC: 180k
Fake it til you make it
Lol don’t worry. There are millions who have done this and have excelled . Ask any andhra guy(no I am being racist here. It’s a truth) . However they are extremely hard workers. So just work hard and you can take a course before joining
Fake it until you get piped
Sink or swim, either way you’ll learn a lot
hire mentors to help with things if you get truly stuck
Which place is a good source to find mentors?
codementor.up is good for this format. maybe also upwork
Maybe chat with the hiring manager and be honest about the situation? They may be willing to help you get up to speed if you have a strong interest in learning. IMO, always best to be open and honest and set expectations up front. Oh, also, some of the best SDEs I've worked with started out in QA.
Somehow you got through the interview, so they saw something in you. Take it as a learning experience and work your butt off to make the most of the opportunity you’ve been given.
You got through the interview which means they have no clue either. Just be polite and pay attention 👍
