It's been 4 months at amazon I have become nervous, insecure, and scared to ask my manager to sponsor my gc. It's coming from the fact the first project that was assigned to me is taking more time than I had imagined due to external dependencies. I have never failed in a task that was assigned to me and this is the first for me. Making me question my abilities. The idea of pip is also scaring me now. I have scheduled an interview with Microsoft in Feb just as a backup. Am I taking the right step?
Hey there, Don't fret it. PIP is something that amazon uses to scare everyone. If I were you, I would have done the same i.e. get MS as a backup. Also, I suggest you have the honest conversation in your next 1:1 with you manager. GO Bulldoze his ass with some honest upfront truth.
You are eligible for a gc sponsorship the day you join amazon. Your manager has no role to play but to provide an email sign off. Stop being nervous and doubting yourself and do the right thing for your future. Tomorrow if you dont get a visa, your manager is not going to come save your day. Especially of you are L5 and above GC is default. Thats amazon policy
GC on day 1 even for L4?
The first couple of months are overwhelming and scary for most people. It’s how you handle this that will determine your success or not. Stop being scared to ask for help, realize you WILL fail at some point. Take ownership of why and bring data that helps explain it and provides a clear path forward. Blind will make you think people get piped all the time, when typically it is a last resort thing that takes a lot more work on the managers side than anyone ever talks about. Just keep moving one forward every day. Use your self service tools and research how to help yourself
What’s pip? My mind went straight to python
Performance improvement plan
The best advice I’ve seen in this thread is to share your concerns with your manager. The biggest mistake engineers make is suffer in silence. Your manager is there to help you. Tell them about your concerns. If they’re competent, they’ll empathize and propose solutions. If they aren’t, that’s not on you, and you have Microsoft waiting. Their loss. Not yours. Unless you don’t speak up.
Agreed with everything said here. Speak to your manager and worst case jump ship. Most companies see a lot of folks leaving Amazon after small tenures anyways so don't worry about it
Look ... two separate points here: Failure in delivery time / estimations - regardless of your abilities - don’t be afraid of it - it happens. How you deal and communicate and come out of it is what matters. Communication is the key and learning for next time (not by pointing fingers btw. That’s a poor way. Think about it as sprint retrospective - you always point the things that YOU could have done to improve the situation) Green card - always full force - always ask and be on top of it. This is the reason why in the previous company I was the first l1 and the first green card in the company. Super critical in your position especially with the current president that keeps fucking with the immigration system
While joining can we ask about gc and then only join..
Do they PIP folks at Amazon in the first 4 months? 😳😳
No And somehow most people get an entire career at amazon without being on pip 🤔
Haha that’s true with any company though isn’t it? There are people like that everywhere, who know how to survive and most importantly, move up
Better ask your manager early rather than late, as Amazon does it for everyone
