"the bill has sparked controversy and received criticism from numerous small business owners, lawmakers, and law enforcement personnel. They argue that SB 553 will inadvertently encourage shoplifting and lead to an increase in crime rates. The legislation mandates that employers develop workplace violence prevention plans as part of their Cal/OSHA Injury Illness Prevention Plan, setting new standards that prohibit store employees from retaliating against thieves." "Paramjit Khaira, owner of Sac Valley Truck Stop, expressed their apprehension, stating, “SB 533 allow[s] all [shoplifters] to come to the store and grab whatever they need.” Small business owners argue that the bill favors large retail chains, unfairly targeting the struggling entrepreneurs who are already burdened with the financial losses incurred through theft." "Senator Cortese faced a backlash outside the capitol just two weeks ago when attempting to explain the rationale behind the bill. Many small business owners confronted him, highlighting how the legislation further burdens them as victims of crime. Already grappling with theft losses, these owners argue that hiring security guards to comply with the bill’s requirements imposes an additional financial strain they simply cannot afford." https://sacobserver.com/2023/09/controversial-senate-bill-553-sparks-debate-over-crime-rates-in-california/
Just another step by liberals towards legalizing theft and petty crimes. You get what you vote for Californians. But hey at least we earned the right to drug minors with hormone!!! So progressive!!!
Bingo
So tired of progressives ruining our once great state. We need to get back to the Schwarzenegger era of California. Still liberal but no where near the fucking madness that we have to deal with today
The average liberal of 10 or 15 years ago would be considered a right wing extremist today.
My understanding is that this bill prohibits employers from asking their non-security employees to intervene, which shouldn’t be part of their “job description” to begin with. Those employees are not prevented from intervening, they can still choose to do so, it’s just that their employer can’t set it as an expectation.
Solves a non-problem. No store requires employees to intervene. Most stores already tell employees not to intervene.
Then what is the problem if it doesn't change anything? This law looks stupid, but you seem to think it won't change anything, so I'm not sure why you're complaining then?
Vote Republican
They are losing their mind
California best place to live in USA....
In the end of the day we all are going to pay for that stuff stolen from the store. Corporations don’t care, they’ll just adjust prices taking into account the risk.
It's amazing how pro-crime liberals are, they're truly factually doing everything they can to ruin America. It's not Fox propaganda, they're literally destroying law and order at every step. California has countless stories where shop owners were jailed defending themselves from robbers while the theives sued them for injuries (and sometimes won) Let's go Brandon!!!
