1. Was 64 IC at Microsoft and was able to change to Senior EM. 1 month after EM title started applying to EM roles 2. Interviewed outside mentioning EM for 4 years. Got Senior EM outside with 80% TC bump. 3. The role clicked and been a year here and got a promotion to GEM with 15% bump.. Leading 3 teams now.. 4. Was at conference as speaker recently and was chatting with Microsoft VP and he insisted on interviewing for GEM role in Microsoft at 67! I diplomatically told I will get back and keep in touch. I don’t think Microsoft can cross the current TC and have a way worse morale since everybody is just thinking of leaving for better comp! TC 290k at 64 (last year)-> 650k (Promo and Stock price increase after joining)
You kicked them
Superb. You will be remembered for this 100 years from now.. 🫡🫡
Nice
Op, which company currently?
I don’t get the 64 or 67 part, but congrats on the big gains OP
L64 is last level for Senior (~ICT4). OP was a manager and stuck there. They couldn't get into principal band (L65 or ~ICT5), where stock awards are wayy better. Now after leaving and the conference, a VP wants OP to return as L67, which is like ICT5, but high ICT5. We call it "Partner branch", meaning depending on org and time, OP could become partner which is a big deal here. Partners are like directors. That's a cross band promotion 3 levels up (from senior to principal) in one year which is amazing. OP's own manager might not even be a 67 because it's for those who have a chance at being partner.
Nice!! Well done! What is your current company? If it is not a well known company then getting to msft might formalize your level to 67. Maybe Microsoft can beat that tc?
Its well known public company with among top 20 in terms of market cap so no plans .. Have a chance to reach director here in couple of years if things work out
Congrats OP. Great behavioral hack.
Super happy for you OP. It shows that success past a certain point is not just ability but being at the right place at the right time. Ofc you haven't interviewed yet but you should. Not to get the job but to set L67 as your new floor here.
That way (hopefully) any potential interview in the following year will start at L67+ :)
Conference as a speaker isn't small thing. Look at how many engineers are really capable of speaking in a team sprint meeting let alone in public. You must be talented and you aren't aware
Moving to meta from MS(64) with huge pay bump I realized many at 64 in MS were talented but stuck in a cog.
Yeah I felt nobody wants to do anything.. You come with an idea and want to take it forward and they know how to kill it .. My team has people who shipped buggy code and would be on incidents all the time .. I was never on any incidents since the quality was great! Manager feedback during connect season was I never see you on incidents so you don’t have any visibility..
