Dropbox…safe?

Got Sr PM offer, IC4. Worried about jumping ship (at Google, L5 right now) All these layoffs are the scaring the hell out of me…. Dropbox folks, I see new products being launched and hiring is slow but still humming along. Is it the calm before the storm? Any insight? TC: 305

Friends at Dropbox have told me the message is they're doing well because they have not prioritized growth at all costs. Company is still small, HC not excessive. Not sure if it is truth or reassuring words, but it checks out on the surface

This is my view, and part of the reason I joined was due to the stability, which is something I value right now

Databricks BeepBool Nov 14, 2022

Yes. Family works there, they’re chilling. Look at their stock

DoorDash eiuzka Nov 14, 2022

I would say the stock performance is solid comparing with other big techs

They had layoffs in 2020 so still pretty lean

Very safe. They started focusing on efficiency and profitability before it became cool so now they are in a great spot.

Check out this post! "Dropbox layoffs? (Tech Industry)" https://us.teamblind.com/s/MgWBCeMe Edit: Oh wait you were the one that made that post lol

How on earth is Dropbox surviving without positive PE ratio?

Amazon yoloking1 Nov 14, 2022

Seems like you have a different notion of what positive means from everyone else lol

Microsoft jaminga Nov 14, 2022

Oops, didn't know Dropbox was profitable. Not sure how they survive against the big tech

Databricks SaYu47 Nov 14, 2022

A few friends of mine work/used to work there. Very boring and big lack of career growth. Looks like a rest and vest place.

Dropbox MoistBoxx Nov 15, 2022

I think it depends. I find my work pretty interesting, but yes there are definitely rest and vesters

Dropbox KetoA&W Nov 15, 2022

+1 my job is very interesting and actually innovative comparing to what I’ve done at bigger companies before this

Why we keep giving IC4 offers to IC3s

Dropbox new 🏠 Nov 15, 2022

This is just the reality of the world. L5 at G getting IC4 offer is definitely an uplevel unless its a tenured L5. But I think this kind of level up is the way to attract outside talent. It only adversely affects internal leveling.

Honestly, I wouldn't want to eat my words at a later point, but - we seem to be doing alright. The company went virtual during the pandemic and prioritized hiring from lcol areas, as well as trimmed down some products that weren't taking off. Leadership is stable if but a little uninspiring, but that's probably just my bias talking. We could certainly use a massive market moving product beyond the file sync capability, but we've been making acquisitions to expand the product portfolio.

Dropbox KetoA&W Nov 15, 2022

I actually think the company is moving in a healthy direction and I see the potential from my work here at least, and so far it looks very stable, esp with our business revenue not solely dependent on US market.
