A tech couple in their late 30’s with 2 kids and a dog in Bay Area. Now imagine two scenarios: Scenario 1: - 700K TC - FAANG jobs, no sign of promo - L5/Sr.SWE’s, not in rat race to get to L6 - Great WLB, no stress about PIP or micromanagement Scenario 2: - 1.2M TC - Always chasing promos - L6/E6 SWE’s, aiming for Director levels - pulling in weekends and late nighters
At this pay, do you really need more TC at the expense of WLB?
So both of you got offers from Amazon?
I had nice WLB for a while, now chasing TC. Same here 2 kids and a dog in a relative low cost of living. Combine TC ~330
To reframe the question: would you rather be in the top 10% of salaried North American incomes and have an awesome time everyday, or top 5% and hate life? Seems like an easy choice
$500k is top 1 percentile of family income. Where you getting top 10%?
Yeah top 10% my BUTT
How is it great WLB if you're being micromanaged?
The goal should be to maximize wealth to retire early or have peace of mind, that being said with 700k TC you can still save good money and have good WLB to enjoy kids. I would sacrifice WLB to build wealth with no kids or kids at teenager age
Depends when you want to retire. If you live within the same means and put all the extra money into savings and then retire 10 years early than 1.2 is better. If you life a more luxurious life than I’d rather just take the 700 tc. To me, sometimes a bigger house just means more space to buy more stuff to fill it with.
Tc is for beginners, it doesn't matter.
Absolutrly should do 1.2M no questions about that
Weekend and late nighters a big no
For that TC op can hire help at home and get headcount at work to get help too
WLB over TC.
