{Edited} Whenever I meet some of my non-tech friends/ family, if we end up discussing career, below question pops up: “When will u be manager?” It is tough to explain them that being an IC i may never be “manager” but will still be growing in my career. How do you handle this situation? #socialcode #tech
By making right friends
Couldn’t agree more!
You can make right friends but you can’t change relatives
By not giving a crap about them. Ps - tc, yoe ?
Not overthinking imo - I had this a lot from my family (European). I tried to explain IC, but didn’t have much success. Maybe explaining parallel ladders with similar pay, explaining that scope / size of responsibilities grows as you go up IC ladder too. Best of luck!
I am the captain
Hopefully, never.
I’m not even at senior level IC and my parents ask me every year or two when I will be a VP…
That’s weird, my friends and I usually ask how life has been and then talk about games/hobbies
Actually my bad, It is not first question that pops up. “If” we end up discussing career, then the question pops ( updated the question)
Tell them you are a CTO
Tell them that management is not a promotion in tech. There are staff ICs who “out rank” managers
Definitely
