I got an interview with 23andme. I wanted to know if it’s worth interviewing. How’s the WLB, career growth opportunities for SDEs, culture etc? Also what’s the pay scale like for my level of exp? TC: 144k YOE: 1.5yr #tech #23andme #wlb #softwaredevelopersalary #sde
Did you pass the DNA test?
As a customer, it’s pretty shitty and useless product. It’s not sticky and doesn’t have business model for recurring revenue.
Their revenue is increasingly gonna be from drug/therapy discovery and genetic testing for clinical markers. I think that could be very lucrative, but you're right havent spent a dime with them since taking the test years ago.
Their revenue will be from selling your DNA information to your insurance company to find future conditions and charge a higher premium
wouldn’t that be something. Hard no on that model; we have better ideas. that’s not even lucrative - how do you figure that would work out, anyways? the public blowback alone lol
Oh put your tinfoil hat away. There are laws against it and if you bothered to research anything about the company you’d see that’s not what we do or plan to do. JFC it’s such a tired conspiracy theory
it’s great imo. interview was nice, career growth is pretty reasonable, WLB is insanely good, and the culture is pretty relaxed. I came from a pretty typical pressure to perform and make the company money place, and it’s nice to work somewhere now that has measured, sustainable progress for any given product. i used to get whole projects up and running in a week, even if it was garbage and we’d tune it, but there is a lot of emphasis on dialing in the POC to being good before moving people over to it, which allows for a good WLB but not necessarily a fun, exciting workplace. Not much of a startup culture, which you might expect. benefits were recently slashed, but they’re still great. Company takes two weeks off, 1 week at a time, in June and Dec, and after 5 is basically silent.
Hi 👋 can I DM you for a referral plz? It sounds like a great place to work and I have a role that’s a match with my experience
It’s a good company to work for. It’s not a place where you can sit and coast, and it’s not worth joining if you are just looking to make boatloads of money from TC. If you don’t believe in the product or mission you won’t last long. If you have the foresight to see and understand the long term goals, you’ll enjoy the work and culture that much more. FWIW, I’ve been here 7 years and don’t plan on hopping anywhere else in the foreseeable future.
This is some good info. Thank you for sharing! I was thinking about applying there and found this post.
They just had layoffs yesterday
your pay should be a little more. maybe around somewhere in the $150k-170k range. this includes stock, bonus, base, etc

How did this happen? (Meta Stock)
Not knowing much about working at 23 and me. But their product is pretty good. If you are on a visa, working on area relating to genetics reseach or engineering might be risky, depends on which country you are from.
