A 5+ yoe MLE based in CHINA needs referrals from FAANG-like based in the US or CANADA

Hi guys, I got my master degree from one of top chinese universities in 2017, and have been working as a machine learning engineer for several big companies in China, like Meituan, Tencent, Ant Group (aka Ant Financial). For some reasons, I'd like to relocate to the US or Canada first. I'm NOT a US or Canada citizen, recently a recruiter from meta connected to me and I will start interview process in next month. In order to get more oversea oppoturnities, could you please give me some referrals of companies could sponsor work visa in the US or Canada Thanks a lot! #china #relocate #facebook #meta #google #machinelearning #machinelearningengineer #twitter

You cant work in US without work visa prior to join and no sponsorship can expedite this visa process due to the nature. Only possible route for your case is (excluding the marriage based green card) h1b or eb1 GC(which requires no sponsorship and you can proceed by yourself). For eb1 based Green card, it seems you are not qualified since it requires exceptional skillsets such as well known professor, lots of well known patent/academic papers holder. For paper, it should be refwrwnced more than few hundreads times AT LEAST. So your last choice is h1b and this requires lottery and you can look up how hard it is to be chosen. My recommendation is to get a job which has hq in US within your country and then look for the L1 visa transfer after a year or so. I wish you can look it up more details about each process i mentioned above. Im not a lawyer or hr. This is just personal thoughts. Dount count on me.

thank you i knew it is difficult to directly relocate to us. the recruiter of meta also told me about that as well and suggested me to relocate to Canada first. It seems that work visa in Canada is much more friendly to foreigners than the US. From your opinion, would it be possible that I directly relocate to canada with the sponsorship from a big company, like Amazon?

Sorry im not aware of the canada situation but as long as hr in meta said its possible should be reliable but moving from canada to US will be the same situation as i wrote above unless you get TN visa things which will take a long time as well as a foreigner TN visa isdedicated visa for canadian citizen who can work in US without above hustles. Again this is my personal thought so information could/can/should/hasto/may be incorrect :)

Do a one year master in Canada and get a PR first? It's the fastest route for most people.

Yea or masters in US and then get 3yrs valid stem opt visa then apply h1b assuming you can get the job where is willing to sponsor you for h1b

right, that's definitely a way but I think the cost is too large for me. since I am 5+ yoe mle and have good income here, and bought a house in Shanghai, so it's difficult for me to re-join univ and get a degree which means I won't have any income in several years. Even if I get a degree, will I restart a career as a new grad?

That's what Amazon did for my friend. They got him to Canada and after he got the Canadian status, they moved him to the US.

awesome, is your friend a chinese?

I think that FAANGs priorities are currently to meet the diversity quota for underrepresented minorities (like African American, etc)

Ant Financial HFeT84 OP Jun 22, 2022

sorry, what's that means? does it mean these companies will hire African American with higher priority?

Meta buck-buil Jun 22, 2022

Not only AA, but other minorities as well. Generally Asian or Caucasian ethnicity has a lower priority

I got an offer from US with L1 sponsored in late 2019 and then 2 months later the boarder was locked down due to COVID. And I ended up still in China. Although I still work for AWS, overseas transfer chances become so rare comparing to situation before COVID.
