tl;dr Ranting here about joining teams with the intent of internal transferring, since HR culls resumes. I’ve identified an annoying problem in tech hiring. Say there is a young and talented candidate that has the skills to fulfill a specific role. They want to apply at the lower tiers since they do not have the years of experience required for senior or higher. Let us assume this position is listed with requiring X years of experience, but the applicant has around X-3 or X-5 years of experience. In the state of hiring today recruiters will cull resumes for all candidates who are too young. Rightfully so, as the vast majority should be culled. But there’s still a problem with squashing high performers. If a candidate enters the company upon a different entry level position they can then reach out to the hiring manager for the original position directly. They can ask the manager if they would consider filling the role with a younger riskier hire that shows a lot of promise. Often times the answer is yes! Many people would consider a young candidate as long as the candidate can prove they are up to the job by some means other than years of experience. The sad state of affairs today is candidates enter companies on whatever entry level or mid level position they can, and then immediately seek out internal transfers. Large companies today such as Amazon and Microsoft have no time requirements before transferring. I myself have pulled this stunt off twice. It is the only way for me to get the roles I like. Do I feel bad for the team I pumped and dumped? Of course, but it’s not my fault the system is broken, and it’s not my fault I have to take advantage of it to get what I want. I talk around with friends about the same age, and I’m hearing the same story. It takes a lot of time and effort for everyone involved, especially the candidate and the initial team. Unfortunately most of the interesting roles are senior or higher, while lower tier roles are boring and generalized.
The interviewing process is so long, that entire team can be gone by the time you finish your bootcamp.
