Since most of Blind's users are in Valley or other HCOL areas, that leaves those who chose to stay/were forced to stay in LCOL areas wondering what life could be if they move. My TC is $120K ($104 K base and 16% bonus) YOE 8 as a "big data/analytics/algorithms" guy. A "nice" 2000-3000 sqft. 5bd house on a 1/2 acre lot in a good school district here costs 250-300 K. This LCOL living provides a good work/life balance, cheap good housing, good schools, no commute(pre-covid), time for hobbies etc, but on the cons side, net worth suffers(~200K for 32 YO single earner), interacting with people who don't want to change the world / have given up on life / are not chasing TC, very limited options for dining out etc. So, would moving to FAANG be that all liberating feeling of bliss with the $400K+ TC $$$ or will it make me more miserable ?
If you want to increase your net worth, then look into investing. You can have a high TC in the Bay Area and still save less. If there’s some work that you’re interested in, and bum**** IL has no opportunity then start preparing . The other things like being bored with people who are generally unambitious just means that you might be slightly more open to new opportunities, but it’s not a signal to move out in itself
I’m laughing because of your use of bumf**k Illinois. Peoria is just that 😂
I work in Dallas but visited Bloomington and Peoria before. They’re the same tier in terms of boring. Both have universities close to them and largely populated by employees of State Farm and caterpillar respectively. Peoria takes the “bumf***” cake though because the founder of the KKK is from there.
If you’re not I’m Bloom now, why are you moving there? Just curious.
I don’t know if you’d be happier in a tech hub, but once you experience it you definitely would not want to move back to bumfk Illinois
Well, if housing is important, that 250-300k house you described is around 2-2.5M here. As a single earner you will arguably need at least 500k TC with a hefty base salary to comfortably afford that, so you may have to compromise in size, commute or neighborhood/ school district. If you move here, you will basically trade free time and housing for career growth, weather/nature and maybe more interesting things to do/people to meet. The last point can be a double edged sword, though - people are very driven here and often don’t have much time for other people.
