Hey y’all, recently started talking to a recruiter about an AI research scientist role at JP Morgan and wanted to get a bit of insight on what to expect. From looking around online and what the recruiter said, the research looks awesome and much more exciting for me than what I currently do at Amazon. My questions are the following, and any insights are appreciated! Qs about role “on the ground”: What are folks actual experience working as a research scientist at JP Morgan? What does a “typical” day/week/month look like? What kind of research expectations does the role come with? Etc. Qs about TC: What does TC typically look like for the role? How is pay broken down (stock vs cash vs etc)? What are the benefits like? Are there any “hidden” perks Im not thinking about (job security, work life balance, etc)? Thanks in advance! Current TC: 330k (until next year when I am being paid half in stocks…) YoE: PhD + 1 year as AS at Amazon #researchscientist #jpmorgan #jpmorganchase

Careful, most people I see in these positions spend time on jupiter notebooks dealing with unreliable data. Also remember that JP des nit have a centralized datalake and the company data strategy is embarrassing 🙈
Pickle Rick! As everything in life, there are Islands of excellence surrounded by seas of mediocrity. Bloomberg poaches a lot from JPMC. Company wide it's very hard to do anything. Big old company having to comply with archaic regulations from about every country on earth. And yes, admittedly lots of checked out underpaid folks. But you will find some island of excellence here and there. By the way, not all of those "embedded startups" in JPMC are Islands of excellence. Some are. Some are completely ridiculous.
I have received an offer from the team and overall I found that the interviewers were knowledgeable about ML research. Many of them publish in top tier conferences. Although I don’t know if they can match/increase your package. But recently I saw some posts where they matched Amazon’s current TC.
That has little to do with having an environment where you can drive meaningful impact as a stellar engineer or scientist.
Yes, I agree with that. Although from the published works, I think some of their works can be quite impactful. Can you shed some light about the work culture of the AI research team?
There could be teams and teams, but please be mindful that JPMC is not and will unlikely be a science, tech, or product-centered company. Success or innovation will be dictated by business (as in old school business) and/or finance people with little desire for disruption or change. And even if you do stellar work, science and tech will always be at the service of bankers. It's just how the industry and this bank works. My advice to people is generally land jobs at places like this at late or terminal stages of their careers (MDs, mostly). JPMC is a recipe for disaster for young ambitious professionals.
I would absolutely avoid at all cost. It is not a place where tech or research folks can thrive. The company is rife with politics and old technology. God forbid if you disagree with someone with a higher title than you. Due to the dysfunction it is not uncommon for an AI team to have not pushed any meaningful research or product for an entire year.
If this is the team under Manuela Veloso then my experience in the past working with them are pretty good. JP has a lot of AI teams and many are just glorified developers who do no research. Veloso's group do some interesting stuff, worked with them on a pretty novel cryptography project for markets.

L4 Google -> 45 interviews, 5 offers, AMA
Don't do it. I had interviews with them. One of their interviewer was like: " You are already at Amazon why do you want to come to JP Morgan" Most of the folks there are looking to move to FAANG when they see fit
Definitely not a good signal while in an interview lol did you get a sense of why they are trying to jump ship to faang? Is it prestige, money, something else, etc?
No idea, prestige and money for sure I am assuming 😅
