Assuming at some point of time, there are too many developers and too less jobs, which either makes us jobless or paid very less. Have you guys given it a thought and do you have any plans to deal with this? My plans are to start an alternative business based on manufacturing or a high end restaurant. Or understanding the markets better and be a full time investor like Warren Buffet (of course, this is difficult). What's your level and yoe ?
Really depends on where you are in your personal life and why you became a developer. If you are a dev because you were good at it, once that is no longer needed, your other skill-set shall come into play. As for me, I am at the core a problem solver. Chose to be a developer just because this stint pays really good with flexibility and lower effort than other demanding career paths. But totally see myself jumping to other similar career paths if this thing doesn't work out.
Makes sense and i completely align with what you are saying. I am in the same boat and a good problem solver in general, irrespective of coding. But the question still remains, like you mentioned jumping to other similar career paths. What other those? Knowing those paths, we can choose to start learning more about them a few hours everyday or getting a master’s degree in that. And thanks for replying in the first place, very rarely people make valuable replies on here.
Other career paths may not be as well paying as this one. I recognize that and am building a corpus to be alright when it does. As for what career path to pick in future, I feel with the way everything is changing right now with tech and AI advancements, if at some point my role becomes obsolete, other career paths that I pick (like urban planning, interior designing) will also have had a major overhaul. Non-mass producible manufacturing requiring human labor is what I see being harder to replace. And teaching roles, especially for middle/high-school where personal touch will always be needed.
