Hi all, Looking for some advice here. I just received an offer from Amex for sr. manager level role. Given the fact that I'm in finance wanted to switch over to do more data analytical stuff, I think this position could potentially be a good stepping stone to get some relevant data-related experience. The offer comes in at 130k which is pretty low. I was told that there could be a signup bonus and a minimal 12% year-end bonus based on performance. I've never done any of the salary negotiations before and am not sure what the sr. manager level in Amex really translates into in terms of compensation. QUESTION: 1. what is the range for the SR.manager level in AMEX? 2. how much can I push? 3. can I ask for a sign-up bonus? # #interview #finance #negotiation #salary
Amex pays shit in general. Their VPs make 300k
Amex pecking order Mgr - sr mgr - director - band 45 vp - 50 vp - 60 vp. You’ll legit never make vp in the next five years here
Sr mgr is a band 35. Managers and senior managers both are classified as a b35. I know real stupid. The range from what I remember is 99100 - 164000, but they try to get you closer to the median as possible as sr mgr. Bonuses are min 12 percent paid at end of feb every year. If you out perform on the bell curve you could get more but since it’s your first year, tough luck. Sign on bonus is kinda rare at Amex but couldn’t hurt to try. Be glad you got 130… in the past you had senior managers in the 115ks What you get at Amex is time… the freedom to do a side hustle or just chill the eff out. I’ve had days where I never logged in and just went out. No one cares. There’s also a tech freeze at the end of the year. So WLB perspective it’s super good.
will they rescind the offer if I ask for a 140k or 135k plus a 5k signup bonus?
Naw, I don’t ever think they would rescind if you ask politely and make a case. Just fyi I asked Disney for 100k sign on… and that was insane to me. But they never rescinded
What functional role are you doing? PM? Engineering?
global commercial analytics. do you know about this team? good? bad?
If this is your only way to move into a data science role then I would consider it as a temporary opportunity for 1-2 years before you exit to another company that will pay you a lot more than Amex. Amex is known to have shit pay, but still has a decent brand name. Work life balance is definitely more possible at Amex than at citi from what I’ve experienced
For NYC this base pay is definitely low. It should be $160k minimum, then 12%bonus is common across B35, usually we all gets 150% of it in favorable company and self rating. So that 12% can easily be estimated as 18%. AMEX is not good pay master but 6% 401k match that does apply to bonus also is a good plus. WLB should be better than Citi.
You could probably pull a small base salary bump and a signing bonus. My most recent hire was an associate level manager and they got 5k but that’s for what’s essentially entry level. WLB at Amex is incredible in my experience. I don’t work super hard most weeks and I have so much PTO I am always scrambling to burn it all by the end of the year and have to make a conscious effort to burn it continuously throughout the year. Not a bad problem to have!
thank you! what do you think it is a reasonable base to ask for a b35 level? and since the manager and sr. Managers are both b35, are they different in some ways? thanks for answering my question.
Never heard of a b35 getting a sign on bonus but wouldn’t hurt to ask. Also Amex is known for being pretty firm on salary offer but again, wouldn’t hurt to ask. There has been a ton of turnover with the recent bonus payout, so they could be more flexible at this time.
I just hired a B30 who got 5k on a 70k base. I would think OP could try to get 10-15k more base and maybe 20k sign on.
How hiring leaders don’t try to get to the higher range for new hires makes no sense. You could’ve offered 85k to that b30. It’s not like it’s your money that your giving.
Fyi if you sign, make sure your start date is before april, or ask your recuiter when the cut off for full bonus eligibility is next year when it’s paid out. I’ve had friends who started 4/1 and got 1/2 of their bonus cut.
this is so helpful. thank you a lot for the information.
Also 12% bonus can have perf multipliers. For a good performer 12% x 1.5 is easily achievable. so final bonus can be upto 20% of base

People who like Modi, are you okay with your country’s leader using words like “infiltrators” for a community?
Where? And what's your current TC?
the base is in NYC. I got shit pay from Citi as well. so around 130
I guess you answered your own question then. AMEX is not going to be better than Citi in terms of job scope, satisfaction or WLB. What level are you currently at, Associate? AVP?
