That's a pretty decent package for Austin. Congrats OP!
Also, what's launch award?
Its like a cash amount vesting over 3yrs. Similar to RSUs but since ARM is not a public company they offer this!
Got it. I've just heard that being called a joining bonus. But thanks for the explanation.
I think you can try for higher base... Intels base at 127k with amazing employee benifits is good. Worth moving out if new base is atleast 15 to 20% more unless you dont see any growth in your current role or have prbs with current team.
Do you have any knowledge about other roles too? I'm interested in learning about some figures for a Validation Engineer & Firmware Engineer.
Sry..I don't know much about them...
Yes i did ask for more, but they came back saying Austins cost of living is lower than Portland etc plus no state income tax. Anyway, I’m not really liking my current work, so I’m a bit desperate to move out. Although I have a couple of other interviews lined up, they’re pushing me to make a decision soon.
Watch some negotiation videos on YouTube and then try to see what you can leverage.
Congrats
Agreed there is no state income tax. Cost of living is lower if you plan to rent an apartment. If you want to stay long term and buy house it's no longer lower cost of living ( of course dont compare with bay area) and property taxes are around 2.3% not sure how it's in Oregon. Yeah if you are desperate to move out I understand that. I was there too... but try to negotiate as much as you can. I moved to austin from california an year back..so telling based on my experience.
Thanks for the suggestion :). Yes I’m planning a long term move and don’t know a lot about the property tax and other details. I’ll do a bit of research and get back to them. How is your Austin experience in general as compared to bay area. Economically and otherwise.
It's a nice city. Downtown is good for trails and to spend evenings. Not much to drive around as in bay area. Traffic is pretty bad during peak hours. And if you want to buy house with in 20min commute to ARM with in a good school district its gng to be around 550k for new house and for that you will pay atleast 2% property tax which will be 11k per year.
I think the offer’s good. It would be great to mention your current grade level and the years in it. The one thing I would I factor in is if an upcoming promo at Intel would offset the gains of the ARM offer. If you are in the Q1 of your current grade pay scale, your manager can get you an out cycle raise to get close to the mid point. The other factor to consider is if you are happy at your current job and if there’s scope for growth.
Currently G7- 1.5yrs. Not too keen on staying at Intel, so was looking at other options.
Understand. Use the grade pay scale midpoint for any negotiation. Your manager will try to offer that as part of retention.
OP, remember your salary is not based on cost of living, it is based on what comparable companies would pay for you. You need to resesrch what others in your situation are making at arm... if a company finds you are desparate, they will lowball you... also google salary negotiation techniques to get some idea... one suggestion would be to tell arm that you could make a decision now if they bumped up the base to your liking, otherwise you need to complete the lined up interviews before making a decision, because your goal is to find the right work that pays you right so that you dont have to look for another job nextbyear... something of that sort
Can’t say that to a recruiter. You can instead say I’d be willing to sign the offer for a 20k bump in base and how you really like the work being offered and its relevance to your interests etc
Thanks guys. I’m trying to use various tactics, but they haven’t gone up yet! I guess I’ll wait for other offers.
What’s a launch award? Sign on? Or, an Award when a product PRQs?
I already asked that question above. Check OP's answer.
So .. like RSUs, do they get refreshed every year?
Making 160k in bay area is same as earning 95k in Austin. Just go for it!
Is it that expensive in the bay area? :O
Absolutely. Try looking for affordable housing. You'll know
always leave intel
