I am a father and work from home, wife is a medical resident. We are paying almost 1,800$ for daycare but its really sad that ever since she has started going there she is sick every other day. I would ideally wish for her to not go daycare, but then we also have to work. My wife and i are worried and thinking to just hire a nanny from care.com asap. Any working parents have any tips? We are both immigrants and don’t have any family here. So its just me, my wife and the baby. Tc: 120k Wife tc: 79k Yoe:6 #parents #sickchild #daycare
Child getting frequently sick for the first several months when starting daycare is pretty typical. I suppose it's good for the child to get the exposure and exercise their immune system early on, but I am not really qualified to say - your wife being a medical resident would know better. As for coping - I am fortunate enough to have paid child sick leave so I use either that or I pay for an ad-hoc nanny visits if I feel like I have to work to not fall behind too much.
She is coughing up blood sadly from accessive coughing. Doctors share that this common for kids who get coughing. constantly nose is also runny, and ear infections. God they just keep coming back
Hang on there, give your kid some honey to soothe the throat. It doesn't stop coughing but it may soothe her system.
Same here. Started 1.7 years and my daughter has been sick most of times. This winter is quite harsh as compared to pandemic era. We are still sending her, Summer will be better for sure ...
First year they get sick a lot, so that’s expected. My question would be, how severe she gets sick? If it’s typical cold I would not worry too much, if it turns to more severe cases like pneumonia then probably having a nanny at home would be better option until she builds robust immunity.

Switch to a private home daycare. It’s less expensive and there’s less kids so they get sick less. I had the same issue. I also went from spending like 800$ a week to spending 600$ a month instead. They’re normally just stay at home moms with a couple of kids who used to work at daycares, just look on local FB pages or something and you can find plenty of good people doing it.
Thx for sharing
This is unfortunately a normal part of childhood growth. What we do is the following, both work from home in one room (yes it’s difficult). Hire a nanny for the day to look after the baby in our house (yes, it’s expensive). Take lunch at different times so you can also do childcare. If one of you can work from 7-3 and another from 11-8 then that can also help a lot. Ultimately, you are in survival mode and the priority is get the baby well enough to go back to crèche, maintain your jobs to a high enough quality level. You should plan to forego income and ignore expenses, in this market just focus on baby and main thing jobs. When the baby is back to crèche then you two can have a little downtime to focus on your mental health and get back at it. Then in 3 weeks repeat the cycle….
Thanks so much for sharing this. I am thinking to talk to my manager and request to work in the night. My wife cant do this since she is a medical resident. What do you mean by creche? You mean send back to day care? But wouldn’t she get sick again? We are okay in paying a nanny more. Its just so much difficult to find a good nanny. How did u guys searched it?
Yes in Europe we call it crèche. She will get sick again, in 3 weeks you will repeat the cycle. If you don’t do it now you will be mortgaging the problem for when she starts school. The same thing will likely happen as she is a first child, so handle it now or mortgage the problem till later. We found a nanny through trial and error, through friends. We try to keep her sweet and hire her a little every week even when our child is not unwell, like 4 hours every weekend. So she knows we’re a repeat customer and hopefully prioritises us when we really need her. We also supply breakfast, lunch and dinner for the nanny so she can focus on childcare and not wondering if and when her next meal is.
I wish i could do this. Sadly i cant. I have unlimited pto. But my team is good. I can request to work in the night
It is all a numbers game. If number of kids exposed is less than 8, it will work like magic. Daycares bundle classes at the beginning and end of day so if your class size is 12, your kid could be exposed up to 36 kids. That means she will be sick every day.
Not a good idea to send to daycare as kid will relate to other children and teacher more than parents. First 3 years are the most important. You would eventually loose the parenting role and they will not listen after a while since they'll be part of a different tribe.
Its sad. Ideally i would like to have her at home. But i cant cuz of my wifes job. Our stupid immigration status. Its just tough. Its not like we are doing this on purpose
Yeah it's not you but everyone with H1B who has kids.I'd say look for options in other countries, USA is not good for children's mental health.
How long has your baby been going to the daycare? They usually build up immunity within a couple of months, and the frequency should reduce. Also, winters are peak time for respatory infections.
About 6.5 months now. Sadly there has been no immunity :(
A couple of options to explore: 1. Nanny or Shared Nanny for a few months - If you can afford it, it gives you reliable care and a break from infections for the baby. 2. Try switching to a different day care. Smaller home based day cares might work out better.
