#tech Currently work at Cisco Webex So basically, I got a fully remote offer from a direct competitor (Zoom), and was planning to give my notice tomorrow. But today is raise/promotion announcement day and my manager just let me know that I'm getting promoted from G6 to G8 (basically SDE2 to SDE 2.5? G10 is Senior SDE). Old Cisco TC: 116k New Cisco TC: 131k Zoom 1st year TC: 218k (Level is ZP3 which is same as Cisco G8 AFAIK) Zoom 1st year TC breakdown: 135k base, 8% bonus, 52k RSU per year (210k over 4 years) and 20k sign on 2nd year and so on assuming stock price doesn't tank: 198k How do I tell my manager about this diplomatically without burning bridges? Edit: Just gave my 2 weeks notice. Feels bad tbh because I truly enjoyed working here and my manager is a really good manager.. YOE: 3.5 Location: Dallas,TX
Tell your manager you can refer them to the new company.
This is the correct answer IF you didn't sigh a non compete. If not be like "remember I have a non compete for x months, but I really really enjoyed working with you!"
Sucks that OP is in TX. Non compete would be thrown out in California
Don’t worry about them bridges. Go join Zoom.
This^ .
Absolute this ^ In the grand scheme of things, bridges just disappear over time No one cares
You didn’t know. It’s fair. You couldn’t have gone interviewing right after you got the news, so tell your manager ASAP to avoid any suspicion of leveraging the promotion.
But try boosting your new offer with this.
Thanks for promo, bye bye
Shit happens. Just say thanks for the promo but Ive accepted an external offer. Unless you want to stay for those stale peanuts go for it.
Thank your manager for helping you out and let him know that you want to explore something new that zoom specializes in and btw you don’t have to mention about Zoom.
You’re leaving your company for it’s direct competitor. That’s going to burn some bridge(s) whether intended or not. I applaud you for the big salary/TC increase. You earned it! Be professional with your manager. State the facts. Leave amicably.
How do you know they earned it?
There’s some level of effort required to refresh your resume and interview well. They didn’t get the new offer out of nowhere.
You can also go to Zoom then hire your former manager 😁😎😈
Man I wish I could since my manager is really a great manager; The only reason I looked for a new job was due to low TC compared to the market.
