Trying to decide whether I should stick with my management consulting career at Accenture or transition to industry position at Tesla. I am currently a third year manager at Accenture Consulting practice, making about $195K base salary + 10% annual bonus (on average). I am getting close to becoming a Senior Manager probably next year, with close to 20-25% increase in base salary and 10-15% bonus every year. I am also in the process of interviewing for the Finance Program Manager position at Tesla. I like the position and the people I will work with, however the compensation package is a little bit lower than I expected (150-170K base salary + 35-40k equity every year + bonus (unknown). Ultimately, I would like to transition to a industry job and I believe this position can be a good bridge for me to do that. However, the compensation package is something that makes me a little hesitant, especially given that I will have to relocate from southern california to Bay area with higher cost of living. Any thoughts / tips / advice on what I need to consider and recommendation on the career decision?
Isn’t WLB at Accenture pretty good
Yes’ it’s pretty good but I don’t want to travel as much as I have a child and family to take care of. Understand that Tesla is not going to have a lot of WLB though
Whats the max you can grow to at accenture? MD @500K ?
Yeah that sounds about right, but I’m not sure if I can become MD in the future though. It’s going to take a lot of effort and sacrifice on my part
Do you want to work at Tesla? Dude there are better companies also
Yeah I was thinking maybe stay at Tesla for 2-3 years and use that as a leverage (ie. good name on the resume) and go to some other company with better pay and WLB? Any thoughts that?
Depends what type of career you want. I came from a manager role in management consulting about 7 years ago and never looked back. If you’re looking to coast a bit by going into industry, this is the wrong company though. 🤣
How’s that transition been so far? Did you ever miss being in consulting? With better pay and career growth? Definitely not looking to coast, but wanted to use the experience and name value I’ll be getting from Tesla and jump into something a bit better in the future
Thanks for that insight. Has that stock refresh been pretty lucrative? I am trying to gauge whether getting that RSU may be more beneficial down the road rather than getting higher base salary
Depends on your performance
Negotiate with Tesla for more money and if they don't pay then keep interviewing with other companies.
For me, it’s been a little bit struggle to transition from consulting to industry due to lack of in house experience. I was wondering if working at Tesla could give me that interview, work that for awhile and move to other tech company
Anyone who has worked in consulting has more variety of experience than anyone working in house. You don't need in house experience, just more confidence. I have never taken a lower paying job for experience. This is some bs that people sell to new grads not people with tons of experience.
Go to Tesla if you want no life
Is it really that bad though? Feel free to be honest whether giving that life up was worth it or not
I haven’t worked their personally but have some coworkers that have. They said there no WLB. You put in 12-14 hours a day. Of course this Al depends on your team. There’s a lot of turnover so no knowledge sharing. One team basically works on all their cars and trucks. Ppl do two years and leave just to get the name on their resume. They told one guy you don’t have to come to the office when he got the offer. Well once he started he was expected to be in every day
Which location are you in currently and what location is the Tesla offer for?
I am currently in the Orange County, Socal area and Tesla office will be in San Jose area
From what I heard from friends who worked at Tesla, they had no WLB at all
Got it, do you know which department they worked for? How was their experience like from a career growth perspective?
Go with more money 💰
Could going to Tesla have potential for more money though through stock vesting? Obviously only if their stocks continues to perform well in the future
