Hi ,
I accepted a low compensation at google with base of 104K and TC 140K for bay area.
3 years of experience and joined as a Tecnical Solutions Engineer. Is there anything I could do now ?

@larrypaige what kind of lavish life do you live? My first job in the Bay area was a total comp of 105k and I made that work until I got a better offer.

Find a life partner while working at G that makes more money. Turn up that charm. 🌟

If you cracked Google then you can crack most of the companies here. Why not interview elsewhere? You can always go back to Google.

“TSE is a mix of product management and developer and I get to interact with customer”

No, TSEs are L2 product support and answer tickets that L1 support can’t. For those situations, TSEs act as a bridge between customers and the engineering team when a technical issue arises.

TSEs don’t do any product development. That is the job of SWEs and PMs. Don’t believe what your recruiter says.

TSE role is simply product support. So salary of $140k/yr makes sense.

My first job in the bay area, TC was $80k. I managed to save $40k in the span of 2 years, had a car, dated, and enjoyed the life in the bay. I did have 2 roommates though, my rent was $500/month 😅 you will be fine with 140k. You don't need 300k TC to live a happy and meaningful life

2015, South San Jose. I did get a good deal with my cousins friend though. I've seen $700/month rent too and that would work as well

  • Let’s be straight—TSEs don’t make as much. Expecting to make $200k or whatever requires you train for a different field (like SE).

It will be completely fine. I joined with 140TC in bay area and 110k base. You can afford a decent apt/car/meals out/401k etc. You will add Google to your resume and your exit opportunities will be great.

I lived in the Bay Area well under this TC for 4 years (75k up to 125k)

Currently at 580k 4 years later. On a more standard SWE path though.

Focus on doing great work and networking and live within your means.

Also worth noting in those 4 years I saved 100k with that income.

COL is different now but...still the income you have is also quite different.
