What opportunities are there at Bloomberg for new grads? I'm just joining and I'm wondering what should I be doing? How do I make my time at Bloomberg more fun and productive than helpful to my career? I'm in pre-training. Training begins whenever the next class opens up. What do you know about Bloomberg now that you wish you knew about Bloomberg when you first joined? #engineering #software #swe
Have a good time, put in your 9-5(or less, Bloomberg has excellent wlb and job security, almost non existent pip), work on projects that'll grow you technically in a fashion not limited to just Bloomberg. If you don't like anything about your team you can easily find another one and feel free to do so, internally mobility is highly supported here. Just don't tell your manager till it's pretty much a confirmed thing with the new team. Grow useful connections and relationships with people. The tech industry is a small world and you're going to be running into many of these people again in your career. The impression you leave on them maybe the reason why some great opportunities land on your desk without you even asking. Coming on to the negativity you'll see in Blind, it revolves around no real IC track leading to slow comp growth, completely non-transparent evaluations, RTO push, legacy tech. Now I'd suggest to ignore all this and focus on the things I suggested above, become a solid dev and build connections, have a good life. When a time comes that you feel like you need more money or a better title and are no longer growing as much as you want, take advantage of that excellent wlb. Push down on your work and spend more time on interview prep. You can get away with doing a lot less work at bbg. Land some great offers and then get out! Good luck OP, I'm sure you'll have a blast. Feel free to ask any more follow up questions or DM me. PS: my context is from someone who worked about five years here and left recently.
Which teams do you think will make me a better dev? How is comp growth? How does comp increase in a organization that is completely flat and doesn't even have titles?
I guess would also depend on where your interests lie: backend/frontend/apps/customer facing? I'd say Software Infrastructure in general is a good bet. And as a new grad more than the most shiny work focus on also finding a team with good support system of managers and nice people. You have an evaluation every year and get a subjective delivery by your manager. I'd say your work has some impact on it and there were some years that I saw much higher numbers due to good work but in the grand scheme of things it was still not worth optimizing for. Best to just focus on learning/growth. And for reference here's my trajectory, note that in 2022 everyone got a higher raise due to market:
learn what "KTLO" is, avoid teams that are still on BIG Iron
I understand what KTLO means. Question is what is KTLO at Bloomberg? What are your main stuff? And what is BIG iron?
Make friends with other trainees!! Easily the best thing I’ve done in the city
Keep on leetcoding
Y?
Bloomberg is a stepping stone, don’t stay here for more than 2-3 years. Legacy tech, bad eng practices (aside from a small number of good teams), etc.
What's your tc?
Find a team that has finished Linux migration, avoid T&A if possible
