Currently at Capital One and on track for a promotion in 2025, but really thinking I want to go work somewhere else. Looking for people leader roles. I have 10+ YOE and have lead large teams and large projects in AWS. Can anyone give me advice on getting a higher role outside of my current company? Do these kinds of roles usually need Leetcode? Admittedly, my coding is rusty. Should I brush it up? Anyone have experience doing this? How did you pull it off? #externalpromotion TC: 251k

Why not stay for director then jump
At earliest it would be January of 2025, then I would probably feel obligated to stay at least a year. Plus I just hate the way Cap1 does performance management (forced distribution, forced attrition). I Want to go somewhere that does them differently. No better time then the present!
What are you looking for in your move? Is it just the title or is it pay? Increased scope? Moving to FAANG/big tech you can get a nice salary bump while staying in level, but you will likely need to go through a more technically oriented interview. It’s all role dependent but you may have good scope from a problem/impact area but likely not a larger team than where you are now. If you move over to another bank you can likely get the title and maybe a larger team from a person standpoint. You could also get some bump salary wise. But you might be working with older tech than you are now. At that level your interview will likely be less technical. It’s kind of hard to say not knowing your current role/skills and TC. But as with any search I’d focus in on what exactly you want to accomplish - and based on that you can select target roles/companies which will then answer your questions (like how technical the interview may be and what skills you should highlight in making the move).
Pay + scope. Don't care about title. I'm looking for 3-6 teams. My experience is primarily software engineering which includes architecting. I've built/ desgined/ worked on highly visible, business critical customer applications, large scale data migration, and also developer tools, among many other things. My coding skills are rusty as I said, but I can code in Python, Go, JS/Angular/ React, C#.
With 10 YOE you should know people in lots of different companies. Talk to some people in your network for referrals and ask about what certain roles/levels entail and then tailor your experience accordingly. Level/pay jumps are why people move, it’s really no different from any other job search, but you’re at a place in your career where this can/should be more about your network than cold applies. Also, to your initial question, one of the differences for many companies between the manager and director level is managing people managers, not just IC’s. So if you have experience leading managers/leads (or coaching/mentoring them) that would be a specific skill I would highlight or be prepared to speak to in interviews.
OP - you don’t want to answer the TC question?
Why is TC so important to folks here? Seems mostly irrelevant in the context of the question.
I agree its not very relevant. Also, TC is in the post now, 251k.
In my experience, if you're trying for a people management role/increase in scope, that's nearly impossible to get without them trusting your results. That's far easier to do with an internal move, then prove more results and look externally.
This is my concern. However, I know people do it. So, I'm wondering how. Is it just bravado and bullshit?
And timing! Getting lucky with being able to fill a need while they are having trouble filling it otherwise.
If you are on h1b, i would suggest waiting till job market gets better.
I'm not on a visa.
come to tiktok! we have plenty of cybersecurity cloud leadership hybrid roles in washington dc
Do you want to hire L6 from Amazon into a senior management role? I’m interested
How is the US based workforce reacting to a possible ban on tiktok? Are people leaving because of that? How is the comp at tiktok in DC?
If you want a title bump - ie something like director, go to Oracle or Salesforce. At FAANG you will be downleveled.
FAANG down level isn’t a certainty esp for cybersecurity roles it really depends how one interviews
Sorry, if someone already suggested as I did not read the whole post but I will suggest move and do not wait for 2025. Nothing is guaranteed your leadership might change, priority changes and things may not work out. Think present you cannot control future. And this company’s culture has gone down so much that I am not sure if they will be able to recover from it anytime soon. Good luck!
