PM is irrelevant role and will die in next 2-3 years.
TL/DR: I am 34 and feel stuck in my „career“. Need advice. Hi all, I‘m looking for advice and possibly referrals re my next steps.. apologies for the long text. Summary: Been working at UBS Switzerland IT as IT Business Analyst / IT Business Manager the past 4.5 years (of which 6months in NYC), basically doing useless bullshit for my managers, that is: PPTs/Excel analyses for small strategic initiatives that only served their political interest. Typical work down/rewards up. No coaching/mentoring, no visibility, no regards for my interests and ambitions - always only the same excuses: just be patient, it will come, yadayadayada. On top of that they lowballed me when signing, I was desperate after a hard upbringing. So end last year I finally called it quits before it became a full burnout. It is okay as I have sufficient savings to sustain another 1-2 years if needed. And I also want the break to get a clear head. Now I am not sure where to go and how to approach that. But I am curious and open to explore. I‘d like to continue having flexibility re location. No 100% return to office. I‘d like to have direct client contact, no 100% backoffice analytics job anymore. I‘d like business travel, as I have extensive international background. I got two masters, business and law.. I have worked in finance it, adult education, government and non profit. I have lived in 5 countries, yet except for UBS it was always next to university so not fulltime and in different sectors and topics. I like meta level thinking, working on governance and strategy rather than deep down in one project. I like smart and challenging while kind people. So now I am thinking of business development / technical sales in crypto or SaaS or even commodities, yet I have no sales experience. How to approach that? Or any form of government relations or community building ..? What jobs / companies in Europe / Switzerland (no US visa) allow business travel, meeting people and making deals? While growing skills, network and personality? Happy about any brainstorming that can help me get unstuck. Thank you, much appreciated! fulltime YOE: 5 TC: 105k #career #advice #findpurpose #switzerland
Well ma. I read what you said and as I was reading I saw that you are looking for something that can keep you sustained without having to visit the office well as you should know the digital market is the next thing in every society and as people are trying everyday to participate in it the market cap is expanding and developing well I am sure that in no time crypto will replace and totally phase out the fiat system. Well I’d advise you try looking at investing in the digital space especially in the crypto market. That’s why I’ve got an IA that helps me diversify my portfolio for me !! She trades for me using Binance and from her prospective a diversified portfolio features staking , lending, mining , airdrops bonuses etc So that’s how she manages to grow my portfolio in such manner !! That’s best bro though she charges 10% of my total profits as commissions for a job well done ! TC $1.8M
Thank you! Nice that you got the ability to invest to such an extend. I first need to build up capital. It’s not necessarily being kept out of the office, it’s more that I want to work with diverse people and not just computers and/or the same people all over. I like variety in activities and topics.

I don't know much about fintech/sales, so apologies if these ideas don't quite match your background. https://snyk.io/jobs/strategic-initiatives-director-2/ Datadog and Databricks have offices in Switzerland as well. From what you've described, they might have a better work environment for you where you'd (hopefully) be rewarded for your input. I think your background would probably be a good fit for an early or late stage startup. There are seem to be plenty that are trying to grow/get a foothold in EMEA right now. A friend and I have compiled a list of companies (mainly international) hiring in CH to help us with our searches. I could pass that along if you'd like.
Thanks, sent PM
Yes I used to work in DACH region. Everyday just do menial work for my bosses. Actually I worked in a government-related institution. So the work was about making recommendations about policies, discussing big picture ideas, etc. It sounds nice, but they are all the ideas from my bosses. My job is just to summarize some papers for them, or crunch some numbers in Excel and make a pretty chart. Cos in Europe and DACH, their thinking is too old fashioned and hierarchical, most teams are organized in a top-down fashion. There is a lot of micromanaging. The worst is at large companies, like Credit Suisse, UBS, etc.. they operate like it's still 2000. I remember I went to work at some big company which advertised an "innovative" working style, and they still force every employee to punch timecards, I almost quit when I heard of that (just joking lol). I have worked in 3 companies and organizations in Germany, Netherlands, and Switzerland, all the same environment anyways. I will not like to generalise, but I always felt that senior colleagues and managers were a little too arrogant, like "my way or the highway" attitude. Also too serious too, rarely smile and only make jokes about depressing topics.. lol.... Anyways.... I came to USA several years back, and my prospects are looking up. There is a wide range of work environments, and not that hard to find the one which fits your style. If you can get the visa, it is totally worth it. Even L1 is fine, eventually you can convert to H1b. But you are already mid 30s, I totally understand if you don't want to uproot your life for a job. So some good alternatives, you can try to work in a startup, or work in an American company with branch in Europe. I have friends working in Berlin startups and they seem happy with the life. So , just giving you some suggestions here. Best of luck!
Thank you! Glad to hear I am not the only one with this perception. 2019 UBS actually wanted to sponsor an L1 for me to stay in NYC. But only on the same contract with the same TC. When I said that 100k is not sufficient for a decent life in NYC my swiss MD literally replied, well then get a room in the Bronx or NJ and commute - it’s unbelievable how far these people are detached from reality. Glad I declined cause with L1 I would need to stick with UBS for ages, and it was 2019, the pandemic was certainly more bearable in CH.. anyway … sent DM.
If I had a finance background I’d move to a Fin Tech company. Strongest startup growth in the UK. Plenty of global unicorns n that space and consultants are advising that they need to stress strategic management. Avoid BNPL companies as that bubble will burst eventually.
Thank you!
