Living in nyc is more expensive than ever. Curious how much people actually spend on things below and how much they save? I make $180k base salary and still feel like I live paycheck to paycheck. That means I get about $9k/month take-home after insurance, 401k, taxes, etc. I spend: - $3500 on rent for one-bedroom apartment (not a luxury building; landlord said he will increase to $4000k starting October). PS. I know this seems abnormal amount to spend but it’s becoming a norm and considered “median” for one-bedroom apartments now :( - $500 on utilities + wifi + phone bill - $500 on food (groceries, eating out( - $2000 on parent support (I’m helping my mom and dad financially because of their health issues) - $500-700 on social stuff (dinners, drinks coffee, etc.). In some months, this is really low, in the $200-300 range. - $200 on gym - $200 on transportation (Uber, citibike, subways) - Save about $1-1.5k/ month Obviously it’s a blessing to be able to save some money, but I feel like it’s never enough. How much do people who make around my salary save and spend on things? Wondering if I should move to a cheaper apartment or get roommates. I’m 30 so I prefer to keep living alone.
What do you mean how do people at your salary save and spend? You are saving >$1k a month and maxing out your 401k. That’s way more savings than 95% of Americans regardless of living in NYC.
Not sure if it said OP was maxing out 401k. The numbers they gave us don't seem to suggest that. For the 1k monthly saving, a good chunk of that can be easily eaten away by international travel.
Too much for parent support. Parents got to go. Jk you’re making plenty
Dude, you work in healthcare. Read the room and show some decency

You certainly should move to a different apartment if your landlord is increasing the rent to $4000k in October.
I’ll look for something. The apartment that I’m in is very spacious so it’s going to be hard to find something of similar size
Well you are paying 2k a month to your parents... Nothing to do with NYC
Not something I can reduce :( but you’re right
Cscareerquestions would tell you 75k is livable in NYC and that you should just get 2 roommates for your studio. Being real though, food and entertainment expenses are high for someone without roommates helping on rent. You can only spend in one category if you save in another. 500 utilities is also high for an apartment, I spend that in a whole house.
Yeah, it’s water + heat + electricity + internet + cell phone bills (I pay for my entire family)

New York or nowhere though
dont do it op im on week one of having left and already major regrets. better to move to queens than move out of nyc
I grew up in NY, you can live for a lot less and have a car if you’re willing to commute like the rest of us. Find an apartment for less cash outside of Manhattan and settle down. A wife roommate is the best kind of roommate. Hehe
don’t say ur paycheck to paycheck dude, just say you want more money
I make 160 base and I have the same struggles you do. I spend less on rent because I live with roommates, but a big chunk of my paycheck goes to rent anyway, and I spend way more in food/social than you do because I eat/go out almost every day. My main advice would be to cut the biggest expense you have: rent. A few things: * I understand you might want to live alone. Depending on the compromises you’re ready to make, you should consider moving to an area where rent is cheaper. If you move to Brooklyn or Queens (Astoria is trendy rn), you might be able to save big. * Every year, when your lease is due for renewal, look for something else. While it might be annoying to move every year but it is the best way to make sure you save money on this. * Consider buying a place. Check prices around, compare your rent to what would be your mortgage + taxes. Keep in mind as well that the place will be yours eventually, or that you can sell it later even if you still have your mortgage on it.
