Hear me out. With recent news of Twitter and Facebook allowing full remote in the future and the likelihood that many companies will follow, I predict huge changes in how young professionals will conduct their lives and choose where to live. Essentially anyone not tied down to children will have the freedom to travel as they please for extended periods of time and will most likely no longer stick to conventional rent. I can see seasonal trends where people cycle through Seattle, Miami, Denver, SoCal, Chicago, Austin, etc. throughout their respective good times of the year. Airbnb is currently in the best position for this but I can also see apartment complexes adapting to marked up 3 month leases as well. Would love to hear what others think or if they have other ideas.
Yeah, that was my first reaction as well. The interesting thing is that the trend is reciprocal: if people start moving around and rent airbnb they will also decide to become hosts and rent out their places. Exciting times for airbnb indeed. Full disclaimer: I am/was considering to leave Airbnb but this trend might give me a pause.
It might lead to even harder regulations though since a tech bro invasion could really fuck up many economies throughout America/world.
For sure. Politicians will always try to tighten up things as a first response. It doesn't mean then that's the correct action though.
Difficult to keep the cult feelings strong with remote workers.
Housing will crash in major cities. Hawaiian prices may go higher.
Few issues with this argument: 1. Moving sucks, ya maybe for one year this would be fun, after that you're going to want to settle in one location. 2. If you have kids, or even in a serious relationship, hopping around every so many months is going to make this difficult/impossible. . 3. Lack of available housing in popular destinations + lower number of transactions (due to longer stays) isn't going to equal higher revenue for AirBnB 4. Working outside of somewhat normal time zones isn't that fun. 5. Short-term rental is more expensive than long term rentals AirBnB is a good business, just not while Covid is around.
Yeah I am trying to do the same. Since we have option to not work from office for next 6 months , I am asking my wife to let’s dump all furniture into storage and live in a different cities every month in US . Surprisingly long term stays (month and above) are pretty cheap on Airbnb and you don’t have to worry about finding an apt or signing a lease. Hoping my wife agrees 😇. Here is the issue though, which might apply for lot of couples - not both husband and wife work in companies which will allow remote. In those cases, people will remain put and not travel.
I think it's going to converge. I think the effects of what we've witnessed are going to unfold years to come. Schools, colleges would have to adopt as well I feel.
I’m doing this now too.
Already left.

The paycuts would still have to allow Facebook to remain competitive so I dont think it would factor that much
