Alaska in January?

Me + friend planning a trip to Alaska in January 2020 during the first long weekend. Any recommendations? Current plan is to just go to Fairbanks and watch the Aurora and maybe do some winter activities then come back. Is that a good plan considering will be there Friday to Monday only? Was also thinking flying in to Anchorage and driving to Fairbanks, but then will have to come back to Anchorage somehow within that short span. Main objective is to watch the Aurora.

To Fairbanks in January? You are going to freeze your asses off. If you don’t mind being a bit cold, do it. It’s a cool city, and doesn’t have the garbage that anchorage does. Driving to Fairbanks from Anchorage in January is dangerous, especially if you don’t have experience driving on ice and in blizzards. Temperature + ghost towns almost the whole way makes it dangerous. Alaska Airlines has a flight that goes from Seattle to Fairbanks. I’d do that.

This. I tried doing the drive last Thanksgiving and we turned around after 4 hours as the road was sheet of ice and driven by many huge trucks. Could not stop quickly without skidding.

Don’t drive to Fairbanks. it’s too long from Anchorage and nothing on the way.

I wouldnt say that. I loved the drive but maybe because the view was too beautiful with the fall already there

I read that the drive is actually very pretty but with snow at its peak, I wasn't sure if doing it in January would be a good idea. Based on people's comments, sounds like not in January

I was there last month and was lucky to experience aurora in Fairbanks when they were at their maximum. It is going to be a tough drive in winters as it was already cold during the time i was there. And aurora is not a daily phenomenon, it depends a lot on other factors too

Oh. Didn't know there was a max --> min. Blogs seem to suggest September to April as Aurora viewing season.

https://www.gi.alaska.edu/monitors/aurora-forecast Take a look at this, it predicts how the aurora activity is going to be in next two weeks. It was a 5 KPI when I was there and you can generally see with 3 KPI
