Joined Google Ads a year go as one of the only few American citizens out of 30 people. Entire team is Asian (Indian, mostly Chinese, Taiwanese, Singaporean). 90% foreign nationals. I see nobody quit in the last 4 years, and all TLs are 6-10 years at Google. Everyone somehow chose to stay in past 2 years of absolute layoff mayhem. I feel like it’s a stable team without layoffs but manager already telling me they stack ranked during last cycle and almost put me under “below average” bucket. I don’t think I can narrowly avoid bad ratings next time once our super important roadmap gets done this year. I also don’t want to be bigoted, but I always feel like my teams are here for visa/GC/coasting which I don’t need to worry. I’m also thinking about quitting soon with lots of backups. Have you see this in your team? How did you feel if you have US citizenship? #tech #google #career #quit
Lol I think my friend is on that team. Sounded like they were unusually friendly with each other, like traveled together, hung out together outside of work.
I’ve seen it but unlikely on my team, but maybe I’m just not part of it ;(
I think you'd know. Maybe a different pod in the team. My friend was telling me that he and 4-5 people on his team traveled to Asia together for like a week. I imagine you would have seen a simultaneous calendar block for like half of your team. Anyways I was just speculating why no one quit- they are all unusually close beyond a typical work relationship. May or may not be the same group within Google ads
The only piece of information you gave is race, and you asked a question about a team where no one on blind has been part of. Then what answer are you expecting except ones related grossly with race?
No I’m asking if anyone else has this experience. What other info can I provide without doxxing?
Long tenure has a lot of factors behind it
Instead of pining it on Asian vs American, just look at your situation at hand. If you aren’t doing well in that team, it’s time to move on.
Would you give the same advice if OP was the only foreigner in an all-American team? Disclaimer: I’m not American.
Yes I would.
Why don’t you tell us. You are the one working with them and has inside info. Enlighten us
Why would you quit if everything is going well? They're working for a prestigious company, enjoying a nice salary and benefits.
We have been doing well but no any longer. The company started hidden stack ranking and many layoffs is the first sign
What are you working on? Did it have high visibility
Stackranking will kill you eventually. They have more insights, private WeChat, hang outside work. Hard to fit in.
Indians hire Indians, Chinese hire Chinese "Americans" think we're all the same. We're not. I say this as someone born in a Communist country. People in the US like to be idealistic as opposed to seeing things for what they are.
Yeah, this is somewhat natural. Funny how this is never discussed and actual problem by our DEI folks. There is basically no diversity at most teams around me.
They'll work harder than a US citizen to keep their VISA. Going back home is not an option.
Since when do you lump in Indian with the rest of Asians?
No offense, just stating reality of my team. Indian people exist and do really well in my team.
As an Indian, I hate being in an Asian team (Chinese ‘, taiwan etc). They discriminate against Indians a lot and we don’t even have citizenship to walk out on them
So how would you avoid such a team?
go report to an indian managers, thus causing the white people to complain about the exact thing about indian managers.

Why does it matter to you?
Cause I think about quitting everyday since I don’t enjoy working here, but the people are so nice I don’t wanna let them down or screw their work over
@Google why care when prob they dont care about you once you clock after 5pm?
