I’m currently at Google in a non-UX role, and having trouble internally transferring to a UXR role (which is what I’m interested in). It seems like every role requires experience or masters. I’m considering applying for masters in HCI but not sure if this is stupid or unnecessary, if I’m already at Google?
Why not try apprenticeship within Google? Do you have extra time you are willing to devote to a project? Seek out mentors and offer to help. This will help you build rapport and a verifiable body of work. Then use that for an internal transfer. Don’t ask for a formal “20%” etc.
Given the market conditions for UXR, it seems fair that hiring managers would want some formal training/qualifications for a job before putting someone in it. They can easily find hundreds of highly qualified, trained and experienced people to trivially take any open role. It's not like 2021.
Ask the hiring managers what they are looking for.
They want experience :(
For junior positions too?
