Am I stuck now?

I've been pigeonholed into frontend when I started my career and didn't know anything about it. But now I like it and I am the go-to person for a things FE in my department. I'm trying to switch jobs and I see a lot of companies out there need either full stack or just generalists. Typically FE roles are in smaller teams and the pay is crap. And if it's a well-known company, they tend to look for senior FE and 5-8 yoe (I'm half that)... Just feels like I'm in this spot where I'm not good enough for anything and there are very few open FE positions at top companies. Am I just too much in my head or is this a real issue? I still practice leetcode and decent with A&DS. 120tc, 3.5yoe

For a lot of companies FS = FE

From role descriptions it doesn't seem like it. I don't have any experience with backend besides just knowing Java and some SQL.

My experience as well.

Can you request your manager to assign you some backend work? atleast bug fixes so that you get your hands on it. And later put that on your resume.

Sure. However I am wondering if it's possible at all to just stick to FE and specialize in it.

It's possible if you prefer that type of work. Most companies FEE (or Application Developers) pay maps to one step lower than SWE pay so it helps a lot to have a generalist/Full-Stack skillset and then just "end up" doing 90-100% frontend work.

You only have 3.5 yoe. I was stuck doing low level development for over 2 years and I just leetcoded my way out of it. I'm sure you'll get calls from companies for full stack if you apply. Just be prepared to solve leetcode and system design problems in interviews.

Thanks, that's encouraging. Leetcoding away!
